Conceptual Design -Wooden frame with a wind up mechanism inside -rubber band powered -Wooden dowel through boat to attach wheels -PVC pipe inside to protect dowel from water damage -More cost efficient and less dangerous than other ideas -Decided not to 3-D print front and back
Customer requirements/product selection -Children 5-12 years old -Customer wanted a toy for his neighborhood pool that was not electrically powered and does not break as easily (plastic) -Batteries were a problem -Designed it without electrical power while still being engaging and fun for kids -Utilized recycled wood to promote sustainable production
Actual Design 23% of the boat uses recycled wood Rubber bands power the twin paddles through a dowel and gear inside Inner PVC pipe protects the dowel from water damage Removeable cabin provides ample opportunity for a child’s imagination Wooden Holder puts the boat on display when removed from water

Customer Feedback and Results -Martino’s little brother, Francesco, loved the look and build of it -He liked that it was easy to use, which was our main goal -He commented that the lack of batteries was convenient -The rubber band mechanism rotated the paddles, however could have been improved -More flexible and durable material -The boat’s sturdy build prevents it from breaking
Cost and Time Estimates -The cost to build 1,000 boats is estimated to be $9,850 -Individual units cost $9.85 to build -Sold at a projected price of $15, this product could give a net gain of $5,150 -The total work for designing, building, and testing the boat was 83 hours Designing- 26 hours Building- 41 hours Testing- 16 hours
Conclusions -A good looking, durable, waterproof boat that is easy to operate -No electrical power involved -Constructed with recycled wood -What could we improve upon? -more propulsion and buoyancy -Would you recommend any additional features? -fun additions to allow the customer to personalize and accessorize their new boat
