a.INTRODUCTION A genogram is a versatile clinical tool that can help family physician integrate a patient’s family information into the medical problem-solving process for better patient care. Physicians in primary care often have to treat patients with serious medical illness examples, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension in combination with psychosocial problems such as domestic violence, substance abuse and relationship difficulties.

INTRO……………. Knowledge of both biomedical and psychosocial issues is needed to diagnose and manage these patients. The family genogram offers the unique opportunity for obtaining family medical and social history from a patient more easily, and for expanding a family physician’s understanding of the presenting problems by providing a quick picture of the context in which they occur.

b.objectives To understands meaning of genogram To know common symbols used in genogram To understand uses of genograms To explain family systems theory and therapy

c.DEFINITION OF TERMS Genogram: a genogram is a graphical representation of a person’s family relationship and medical history. It is a unique type of family research diagram. It not only records family members and their relationships to each other but also many of their physical and physiological attribute by utilizing an elaborate system of symbols. Relationship: the way in which two or more people or things are connected, or the state of being connected. Family: a group consisting of two parents and their children living together as a unit. Medical history: a narrative or record of past events and circumstances that are or may be relevant to a patient’s current state of health. Family tree: a chart representing family relationships in a conventional tree structure.

c.Main presentation COMMON SYMBOLS USED IN GENOGRAMS In a genogram, female family members are represented by circles and amales by squares. To represent someone who is deceased, you’d draw an x through their symbol. A pregnancy is usually represented with a triangle and an x through the triangle reflects a miscarriage or abortion.a

Uses of Genograms Genograms are useful in almost any profession that deals with patterns of heredity and psychological issues. They are useful in the study of diseases and behavior, and social interaction. 1. Medical genograms enable practitioners to evaluate an individual’s health risks. 2. Sociologists use genograms to gather objective information and track trends across generations. 3. A genogram displays the emotional bonds among individuals composing a family or social unit. 4. Provides family counselors or therapists with a starting point to explain family dynamics to a client who is going through personal or family therapy. 5. Genealogists are able to use genograms to document complex family trees that include information regarding marriages and divorces, adoption, strained relationships, etc.

In couples counseling, genograms can assist a couple in developing insights into the extraneous influences on the couple’s relationship. Genograms are used in pre-marital counseling to identify possible conflicts, and resources. Couples also benefit from exploring areas of compatibility and possible conflict which a genogram can reveal. Substance abuse counselors use genograms as part of assessment and for tracking progress. A genogram can help the client identify current relationships that trigger this. School guidance counselors use genograms as a part of a developmentally-focused career education.

FAMILY SYSTEMS THEORY This is a theory introduced by Dr. Murray Bowen that suggests that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from one another, but rather as part of their family, as the family is an emotional unit. According to Bowen, a family is a system in which each member had a role to play and rules to respect. Within the boundaries of the system, patterns develop as certain family member’s behavior is caused by and causes other family members behaviors in predictable ways. Maintaining the same pattern of behaviors within a system may lead to balance in the family, but also to dysfunction.

FAMILY SYSTEMS THERAPY One of the best ways to begin therapy and to gain understanding of how the emotional system operates in your family system is to put together your family genogram. Studying your own patterns of behavior and how they relate to those of your multigenerational family, reveals new and more effective options for solving problems and for changing your response to the automatic role you are expected to play.

D.SUMMARY Genogram is a very important clinical tool used in health centres especially in taking history of patients with genetics diseases that follow the family trend. So the knowlege in genograms will help the clinicians in combating such diseases, also the knowlege on this is mostly used by counsellors when dealing with clients with family problems

E.CONCLUSION A genogram is a practical clinical tool that fosters a family systems approach to patient care. A genogram give family patient’s physicians a quick integrated picture of patient’s biomedical and psychosocial histories.

F.RECOMMENDATIONS As medical proffesionals, its very important to understands the knowledge of genogram as its will be very useful on dealing with diseases which pass through generations such as diabetes, hypertension and ulcers, and also upon dealing with other psychosocial issues such as domestic violence.
