The ACT Chassidy Lawson

Test Date: February 28th (Walker Center) 8:30 am (Sleep well, eat well)

What is the ACT? ∙The ACT is a nationally administered, standardized test that helps colleges evaluate candidates. ACT and SAT scores are accepted interchangeably. This allows students to choose which exam is better for them, however, it is common for students to prepare and take both exams. ∙The ACT is generally taken by students, for the first time, during the Spring semester of their junior year of high school. This allows enough time for the student to prepare and retake the test if needed. Kaptest.com

ACT Breakdown English: 45 Minutes/75 Questions (30 seconds per question) 5 passages, each holding 15 questions Students are not tested on spelling or vocabulary but on their understanding of the conventions of English—punctuation, grammar, sentence structure and rhetorical skills. Mathematics: 60 Minutes/60 Questions (1 minute per question) Questions include algebra, functions, geometry, statistics and probability, number and quantity and essential skills. Reading: 35 Minutes/40 Questions (50 seconds per question) Students are tested on passages from social studies, natural sciences, literary narrative or prose fiction and humanities. Kaptest.com

ACT Breakdown Continued… Science: 35 Minutes/40 Questions (50 seconds per question) Questions drawn from fields of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy and meteorology. Writing: 40 Minutes/1 Essay Students are given one prompt to write about. They can not choose their topic. Optional. https://actapps.act.org/writPrefRM/ Kaptest.com

Cost Juniors at WECHS take the ACT for free. If additional test taking is needed, the costs are: Test with no writing: $42.50 Test with writing: $58.50 *Fee includes reports for the student, their high school and up to four colleges of their choosing. All fees are nonrefundable. Act.org

ACT Scoring Composite and each test score (English, math, reading, science) range from 1-36. The National Average ACT Score: English 20.1 Math 20.6 Reading 21.3 Science 20.8 Composite 20.8 Prepscholar.com

Benchmarks College Course ACT Subject Area ACT Benchmark English Composition English 18 College Algebra Mathematics 22 Social Sciences Reading Biology Science 23 “The Benchmarks are scores on the ACT subject-area tests that represent the level of achievement required for students to have a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in corresponding credit-bearing first-year college courses.” Act.org

Scores Continued… How Soon Will Scores be Ready? Most scores are available to view online 2 weeks after the test. If a student takes the writing test, score reports are released after all scores are available, including writing. This usually takes between 5-8 weeks after the test. Customer service cannot provide scores by phone, email, chat or fax. Act.org

Superscore ∙For students who have taken the ACT more than once, some colleges superscore their ACT scores. ∙What is superscoring? -Colleges will look at the highest individual test scores and calculate a new, super composite score from across all test dates. ∙The ACT Superscore is the average of the highest Math, Science, Reading and English scores. The following link provides a list of schools that do superscore ACT scores and schools that do not superscore. file:///C:/Users/h393intern/Downloads/superscoredownloadablepdf.pdf Princetonreview.com
