Greyfos & Kenya Red Cross Society Kenya Forest Working Group Tree-a-thon 2016 Presentation by: Greyfos & Kenya Red Cross Society to Kenya Forest Working Group

Environment Overview

2016 in perspective: 1by20 meets 2.5 by 2020 through SERP 2014 Dynamics : KRCS, MENRRD & IFRC and other stakeholders launch the Sustainable Environment Restoration Program (SERP)>>> to contribute to the achievement of a sustainable natural environment in the country …………... 2.5 Billion by 2020 2015 in perspective: Greyfos launches 1by20>>> Plant and grow one billion trees in deforested and degraded water catchment areas by 2020 2016 in perspective: 1by20 meets 2.5 by 2020 through SERP Government? Communities? Leaders?

The Tree Gap… Forest Cover Current - 6.99% Target 2030 – 12%

….. A broad range of players in the forest growing arena in Kenya … & the degradation is constantly increasing exponential and inverse to the conservation efforts 42 Million Kenyans It is largely overwhelmed by the challenge though steadfastly having new players….. ????? And – how is it that the general population is largely not actively participating in activities….. Many Questions Arise What direction to take? How do we brand environment conservation? Have we fully understood the challenges? Are we achieving synergy? What strategies to ensure survival of seedlings planted (beyond planting ) What media mix will work Best (for the public)? Etc… The 2.5 Billion Trees Gap

Tree-a-thon 2016

Tree-a-thon Basically is Two World Records Multiple Venues Mass Involvement

Two World Records Plant 5 million trees in one hour Current record is 2.3 million held by Treevolution in 2014 done by 122,168 participants in 29 locations (29th September 2014), Phillipines Plant 20 million trees in 12 hours Current record 14,372,801 in 9,272 locations Forest Department in India, 31st July 2014) More records include: Most trees planted in an hour by a team; Most trees planted in a city;

Multiple Venues Gazetted Forests Areas Riparian Areas Schools and Educational Institutions Parastatals/ Corporates lands Private lands Counties

Mass Involvement General Public; organized groups and Private land owners Schools, Universities, Colleges NGOs, CBOs, FBOs Government agencies ;National and County Corporates Other Stakeholders

Anticipated Challenges

The anticipated challenges would include… 1 2 3 Seedlings Planting Sites Masses Finances 4 Plan Tree Seedling Suppliers CFAs KFS, KEFRI County govts KFS, NEMA Other stakeholder Colleges, Universities, Schools County govts Corporates Campaign My Tree App Social enterprise model

Where are we now… KRCS and other stakeholders; A network of volunteers in all 47 counties SERP Taskforce ; support of the MENRRA,IFRC, ICRC, KFS, WRMA County Governments interest; Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Bungoma Online platform; Developing My Tree App Tree seedlings suppliers; in talks #GoGreenKidsFestival; Tomorrow, 28th May 2016 at KFEET

Why are we here… Support required: Participation: sign up as partners Propel: ambassadors of the cause Logistics support (including tree growing sites) Financial support (resource mobilization)

Why KFWG… Lobby and advocate for afforestation Build capacity of members, CFAs and forest-dependent communities Livelihoods support Resource mobilization Awareness creation (Institutions of higher learning)

Lessons painfully learnt… ‘Harnessing of minds in Design avoids poor implementation’ ‘STAKEHOLDER synergies key to success of the Tree-a-thon’ ‘Results-Based Approach Key to Tree-a-thon Completion’

Thank You
