Famous Russian, American and British writers

British literature is very rich British literature is very rich. You can always find piece of country connected with a famous writer. All of us know the names of the great British writers like Shakespeare, Hardy, Burns and Sir Walter Scott. The best place to begin a literary exploration of London is at Westminster Abbey. Many famous writers made London their home. Some of their homes are open to the public. You can visit houses of Oscar Wilde, George Eliot, Mrs. Gaskell and others.

William Shakespeare He was the greatest dramatist and writer. The most famous tragedies include Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth and the best known love story in the world is Romeo and Juliet. Many well- known sayings come from his works, and Shakespeare also had a great influence on England.

Charlotte Bronte Charlotte Bronte is a unique English writer of the 19th century. Her literary works were characteristic for the English realism trend. In 1846 «Poems» written by the three Bronte sisters were published. Charlotte Bronte’s novel «Jane Eyre» published under the pseudonym Currer Bell brought her fame. Her other novels «Shirley» and «Villette» were not so famous. «Villette» is one of the first psychological novels in the English literature of that period, and later it was developed by different writers. «Jane Eyre» is an autobiographical novel.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky Dostoyevsky is famous for his profound psychological analysis of the depth and complexity of the human soul. He understood the intricacies of character, especially of pathological conscience. He often suffered great physical and mental diseases, including attacks of epilepsy. His books are characterized by complex plot and character development. Dostoyevsky edited a magazine which serialized some of his books.

Mark Twain Mark Twain was the pen-name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, the US most famous humorist and the author of popular and outstanding autobiographical works, travel books and novels. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) was one of Twain‘s best books. Twain once characterized the book as «simply a hymn put into prose form to give it a worldly air».

Ernest Hemingway He is an outstanding American novelist, short story writer and journalist of the 20th century. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. With the publication of The Sun Also Rises (1926), his novel describes a group of expatriates living in postwar Paris. They take psychological refuge in such physical activities as eating, drinking, travelling and love-making.
