Grant’s Strategy: Had Lee outnumbered, both of them knew it. Pick up pace of the war, wear Confederates down William Sherman divide the Confederacy while Grant harassed Lee’s army. Grant eventually cornered Lee at Petersburg

Sherman’s March to the Sea Destroyed 50 mile wide path through state of Georgia Killed livestock, destroyed farms, burned crops Union Bow-tie: Sherman twisted up railroads so southerners couldn’t send materials to Confederate army. Destroyed city of Atlanta = Lincoln’s re-election.

Lee Surrenders: Appomattox Courthouse: where Lee surrenders on April 9, 1865 officially ending the Civil War.

Terms of Surrender Confederate soldiers take oath of loyalty to U.S. Lincoln granted all of them amnesty committed treason. Officers keep their horses and weapons Union soldiers ordered to remain silent as southerners turned in weapons. Symbolic of unity
