NAACCR and caBIG® Interoperability Lewis J. Frey, PhD Lewis.Frey@HSC.Utah.edu
Objectives Provide an overview caBIG® and interoperability Show a specific caBIG case with NAACCR standards Discuss the implications of caBIG interoperable NAACCR standards
Information tsunami and the tower of Babel The Information Tsunami The ever increasing and overwhelming volume of data Multitude of data sources (clinical, genetic, epidemiologic, etc…) Material from: https://cabig.nci.nih.gov/ and caBIG Nursing Overview.ppt Tsunami: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Tsunami_by_hokusai_19th_century.jpg. This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired. Tower of Babel: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Confusion_of_Tongues.png. This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired. A Research Tower of Babel Each research community speaks its own scientific “dialect” resulting in a confusion of tongues Integration is critical to achieve understanding & synthesizing findings for discovery Material adapted from: https://cabig.nci.nih.gov/
National Cancer Institute (NCI)’s cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG®) “Connect scientists and practitioners through a shareable and interoperable infrastructure” “Develop standard rules and a common language to more easily share information” “Build or adapt tools for collecting, analyzing, integrating, and disseminating information associated with cancer research and care. “ “The mission of caBIG™ is to develop a truly collaborative information network that accelerates the discovery of new approaches for the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer, ultimately improving patient outcomes.” caBIG is an initiative to connect scientists and practitioners with standards based tools and services to ultimately improve patient outcomes. 1. caBIG® Interoperability Reciprocal use of system resources through models and services Models express the meaning of communication Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” causes a riot at premiere Services express the means of communication Beatles’ “I want to hold your hand” on 8-track tape
Why caBIG® Interoperability? Addresses information tsunami and the tower of Babel Transmit cancer surveillance data Secure Efficient Timely Avenue to expand registry information Clinical Biological Genetic

Benefits of caBIG® Interoperability Latency Services to pass data between providers and registries on the grid Bypasses “sneaker net” Quality Services to assess data quality while it is still at the provider’s site Goal is to reduce follow-back
Conclusion caBIG provides a process to converge on a common understanding for efficient information exchange. Through reciprocal use, you can use the work of others to advance your work. NAACCR standards are already part of caBIG. Latency and quality of NAACCR data can be improved by building on the caBIG system.
