Orbits, quiz, introduction to electric fields Wednesday, October 26, 2016

Unit: Field Forces Wednesday, 10/26 Draw the diagram below on your warm-up sheet. The diagram represents the side view of a vertical circle. The object is moving counter clockwise. Draw a FBD of the forces acting on the object the moment it passes point ‘P’ on the circle. Upcoming important dates Note: every day you will have either a HWK check or HWK quiz. Thursday, 10/27 – Last day for test corrections (7:30 AM to 8:30 AM) Monday, 10/31 – last day to re-test to an 85 for Dynamic forces unit. Tuesday, 11/1 – unit review due and unit quiz Wednesday, 11/2 – last day to turn in missing field forces work (by 4:00 PM) Thursday, 11/3 – field forces unit test

Home work quiz – 3 minutes Take out your gravitational homework. To earn full credit you must write out your equation, show the substitution, and include units for your answer.

Orbital CNs Highlight key information and summarize each section of the CNs.

Orbital simulation Open the PhET “My Solar System” simulator at http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/my-solar-system (link is on my web pate 1. Select “Sun and Planet” from the dropdown box in the upper right corner. 2. Put a checkmark in all of the boxes below this dropdown box. 3. Leave all of the options at their current defaults. 4. Press start and allow the planet to orbit 10 times. Measure this time using the built in timer and divide by 10 to get the orbital period. T = ___ 5. Use the tape measure to measure the radius (assume it is meters)of the planets orbit. R = _________________________________ 6. Use these measurements to calculate the velocity of the planet. 7. Reset your data and change the variables for circular motion. Record your observations (ex: when I changed the radius…)

Homework Complete the orbital homework (you do not need to do the bonus question). Homework is due when the late bell rings. If you have trouble with a question complete the POC process. Blank questions = zero credit

Cool Down Describe Newton’s cannon.
