HATCHET BY: GARY PAULSEN

Chapter 1

Brian Robeson is 13 years old and lives in Hampton, NY.

His dad lives in Canada and his mom lives in New York. Brian’s parents are divorced. They were married before, but now they live separately. CANADA NEW YORK His dad lives in Canada and his mom lives in New York.

During the school year, Brian lives with his mother in New York. During the summer, Brian lives with his dad in Canada. CANADA

Brian is going to the airport to fly to Canada. He has to bring special equipment to his dad, who is an engineer. Engineers work with math science and build things like bridges.

Before he gets on the plane, Brian’s mom gives him a hatchet to use in the woods in Canada. He attaches it to his belt loop.

Brian is the only person on the small plane, besides for the pilot who drives the plane using special controls.

The pilot asks if Brian wants to fly the plane and shows him how to use all the controls.

He takes hold of the wheel and flies the plane by himself.

All of a sudden the pilot starts to feel pain throughout his body. Brian realizes the pilot is having a heart attack, since his heart stopped beating and he stopped moving.

Chapter 2

Brian realizes that the pilot died from the heart attack and he is really scared. Brian gets really nervous, because he doesn’t know how he is going to land the plane without the pilot’s help.

Brian looks around at the controls and sees a radio that pilots use to call people when they are flying an airplane.

No one answers Brian’s call so he starts to panic.

Chapter 3

Brian needs to focus. He knows that the engine is dying because it is running low on gasoline.

Even though Brian is afraid, he must land the plane by crashing it.

He tries to find a large lake where he can land the plane instead of on the hard ground. Brian sees a lake and aims the plane toward it. The plane hits some trees, then lands in the lake.

Water rushes into the plane when it lands in the lake. He screams because he is scared, but he gets out of the plane and swims to the surface of the water.

Chapter 4

Brian falls asleep after he swam to land. He wakes up on the land and can’t believe that he survived the plane crash.

Brian gets bitten my many mosquitoes near the lake which hurts and makes him itchy.

Chapter 5

Brian realizes that he is really hungry and thirsty because he hasn’t eaten or drank anything since before the plane ride. He decides to drink water from the lake.

He realizes he’s all alone in the woods and gets really sad.

He remembers that his 6th grade teacher, Mr He remembers that his 6th grade teacher, Mr. Perpich, told him to be positive in every situation. He tries to think happy things.

Chapter 6

To make himself happy, Brian remembers his best friend Terry and how they used to play in the park every day.

One time Brian and Terry pretended they were lost in the woods.

Brian remembers that they built a lean-to for shelter, so he decides to make one to protect himself now that he is actually lost in the woods.

Brian finds a bush that has lots of berries on it. He eats a lot of berries because he is very, very hungry.

Chapter 7

Brian wakes up in the middle of the night and gets really sick because he ate too many berries the night before.

He walks down to the lake and looks at his reflection in the lake He walks down to the lake and looks at his reflection in the lake. He cries when he sees his cuts and bruises from the plane crash.

Then he saw a scary bear and got really scared. He keeps his hatchet by his side when he goes to sleep, just in case the bear comes back.

Chapter 8

When he hears something near him in the middle of the night, he throws his hatchet at it. It’s actually a porcupine, whose spikes get all over Brian’s legs and hurt really badly.

After pulling out all the spikes, Brian cries some more because of the pain.

Brian falls back to sleep Brian falls back to sleep. He dreams about a time Terry and his dad tried to make a fire using sticks and logs from the woods. They hit a hatchet against a stone to make sparks, which would eventually become a big fire. Brian tries this many times.

Chapter 9

Trying to make a fire using his hatchet was a lot harder than Brian thought. After many tries, Brian realizes he needs oxygen to make the fire get bigger. He can add oxygen to the fire by just blowing on the sticks when the sparks land on the sticks.

Brian finally got the fire to work Brian finally got the fire to work! It got bigger and bigger and he felt very accomplished. The fire is going to keep scary animals and mosquitoes out.

Chapter 10

The next morning, Brian finds turtle eggs near the lake. He realizes he could eat the eggs because they are very good for you.

Chapter 11

He also realizes that he could eat the fish that live in the lake.

The fish are very hard to catch, so he makes a sharp spear from a rock to try to catch them.

Chapter 12

Brian finds small chickens he calls “foolbirds.” He knows that he can kill and eat the foolbirds to eat as food, too.

Brian realizes how much he has learned about survival Brian realizes how much he has learned about survival. He knows that anyone can survive in the woods because nature has everything you need to live.

The next night, Brian wakes up to the sound of a plane engine flying above him. He tries to yell, but the people in the plane don’t see or hear him.

Chapter 13

Brian doesn’t think he is going to see his family or friends again Brian doesn’t think he is going to see his family or friends again. He is so upset that he tries to kill himself with his hatchet.

Brian realizes that he shouldn’t have tried to hurt himself, so he becomes a “new Brian” and continues to fight for survival.

Chapter 14

The next day, a skunk walks by Brian’s collection of turtle eggs.

When Brian tried to throw his hatchet at it, the skunk sprays him and then eats all the eggs he had collected.

Chapter 15

Brian has a hard time trying to catch fish and foolbirds. He learns to appreciate how his mom cooked for him every day.

After finally catching a foolbird, he cooks it over the fire so he can eat it.

Brian learns patience because he has to wait for the bird to be done cooking, otherwise he will burn his tongue because it is too hot.

Chapter 16

Brian has bad luck the next day Brian has bad luck the next day. First, he gets attacked by a moose when he tries to wash his hands in the lake.

Then, a tornado destroys his lean-to.

Chapter 17

He decides he is going to try to get it the next morning. Before going to bed the next night, Brian remembers that there was a survival pack in the plane he was in. He decides he is going to try to get it the next morning.

In order to get to the plane, Brian must build a raft using strong tree branches and sticks. He takes the raft out on the lake and attaches it to the plane using sticks and twigs.

Chapter 18

Brian uses his hatchet to cut a hole through the plane so he can get inside of it.

He swims inside and finds the survival kit He swims inside and finds the survival kit. He is very tired from holding his breath for so long, so he sleeps when he returns.

Chapter 19

Brian opens the survival kit to find many useful items, like a first- aid kit, a compass, a fishing kit, and more.

Brian doesn’t like these items because they aren’t found in nature, like twigs, sticks, and animals.

He thinks it’s broken when it doesn’t make a sound. Brian tries to use an emergency transmitter from the survival kit, which tells other pilots that there is an emergency. He thinks it’s broken when it doesn’t make a sound. HELP! HELP!

All of a sudden, a plane lands on the lake All of a sudden, a plane lands on the lake. The pilot gets out of the plane and tells Brian that he heard his emergency signal.

Shocked, Brian responds by asking the pilot, “My name is Brian Robeson, would you like anything to eat?”

In the end, Brian survives using his hatchet and the skills he learned in nature. He returns safely home to New York.
