POWERPOINT PRESENTATION WELCOME POWERPOINT PRESENTATION ON RIGHT FORM OF VERB Prepared by Md. Tarikul Ghani

RULES OF RIGHT FORM OF VERB If the sentence expresses universal truth, general truth and habitual fact the verb in the sentence will be in Simple Present Tense. In this regard some adverbs Always, Generally, Normally, Daily, Occasionally, Usually, Sometimes, Everyday etc. are found in the sentence. Example: Daily he (take)________ his breakfast at 9 am. Sometimes I (go) _______out for a walk.

2. If the sentence expresses any sense where we find the continuation of the work the verb in the sentence will be in Present Continuous Tense. In this regard some phrases like Now, At this moment, Day by day etc. are found in the sentence. Example: He reads novel but now he (read) _____short story. Normally he drives taxi but today he (drive) _______a truck.

3. The action which is over but the time is not mentioned when the action is over the verb will be in Present Perfect Tense. In this regard some adverbs like Just, Just now, Recently, Lately, Yet, Ever, Already etc. normally indicate that the verb will be in Present Perfect Tense. Example: Recently he (pass) _____ in the exam. Already I (do) _____the work.

4. In a sentence sometimes it is found that the action is going on for a period of time or for the time being. The verb will be in Present Perfect Continuous Tense. Example: He (live)............in Mymensingh since 2000. He (live)...........in Mymensingh for 10 years.

5. If any past indicating word is found in any sentence the verb will be in Simple Past Tense. In this regard past indicating words include Yesterday, last, Once, Long since, Ago, Before etc. Example: Last year I (meet).................him in London. Once there (live)…………… a famous king.

6. Any sense in a sentence that expresses continuation of an action in the past will be in Past Continuous Tense. Example: An accident occurred when I (go)..........there. When you came to me I (eat)……….rice.

7. If two actions are found in a sentence in the Past previous one will be in Past Perfect and the other one will be in Past Indefinite Tense. Example: Yesterday he (eat)_______rice before I (come)_______. He (eat)_______before I (come)_______.

8. If future indicating word or any sense is found in a sentence the verb will be in Future Indefinite Tense. Future indicating words include Tomorrow, Next etc. Example: He says that he (go)_______home tomorrow. He has decided that he (do)_______the work.

9. If two verbs are found in a sentence and if the verb in Principal clause is in Present or Future Tense the other one or ones will be in any Tense according to the condition of the context. Example: He says that he (write)______ a letter. He will say that he (write)_____a letter.

10. If two verbs are found in a sentence and if the verb in Principal clause is in Past Tense the other one or ones will be in any forms of Past Tense according to the condition of the context. Example: I did not understand what he (say) _____about it. He said that he (go)_____ out.

11. Sometimes two verbs are found in a sentence 11. Sometimes two verbs are found in a sentence. If the verb in principal clause is in Past Tense and if there is any future indicating word or sense in the other part, there will be Would before the base form of the verb. Example: He said that he (do) _____the work on the following day. Rahim decided that he (go) _____home.

12. If two clauses are found in a sentence and purpose is expressed in one clause, probability related word i.e. may or might, can or could will be placed before the base form of the verb in the other clause. Example: He reads more that he (pass)_____ in the exam. (Ans: may pass or can pass) To use ‘will pass’ or ‘pass’ is incorrect. He ran fast so that he (win)______ the race. ( Ans: might win or could win) To use ‘won’ is incorrect.
