introduction Part 1—connection between the Paschal Mystery & prayer Part 2 here—connection between the PM & the liturgy Liturgy = official, public, communal prayer (worship) of the Church Look at the heart of the liturgical year—the Easter Triduum Every Eucharist makes Christ’s sacrifice & therefore the PM present Thus the liturgical year celebrates all the aspects of the PM in an annual cycle—new way of looking at time as sacred The 3 day-1 celebration of the Easter Triduum is a unique kind of PM retreat Goal is to treasure & celebrate—let’s make a promise this year even though only obliged for Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday Four articles in this part (A. 46) – Introduction to the Triduum (A. 47) – Holy Thursday (A. 48) – Good Friday (A. 49) – The Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday)

Article 46: introduction to the triduum Holidays & holy days as citizens of the US & heaven—identity & unity Sunday is foundation of liturgical year to celebrate Resurrection of XT Annual cycle of feasts from Advent to Christ the King in Ordinary Time; context of worship; celebrate the Paschal Mystery eucharistically Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, Triduum (three 24 hour days forming one continuous highly symbolic celebration), Easter, Ordinary Time Liturgy—official, public, communal work of the Church—we participate in the work of the Head as the Body of Christ Eucharist is central; also other six Sacraments Also funerals & Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office or Breviary) Prayer services & bible studies are great but not liturgy Terminology: Gk. liturgia, the liturgy or sacred liturgy, liturgical, a liturgy or liturgical celebration or ritual, liturgist Liturgy is Trinitarian & sacramental (like a Sacrament) Father—source of all blessings, the greatest one being his Son Jesus Christ– central to liturgy; gives & makes himself present through Holy Spirit—prepares us to receive Jesus Christ & the PM present in the liturgy

Article 47: holy thursday Lent is the time the Church sets aside to prepare for Christ’s Passion, death, & Resurrection by deepening our participation in Christ’s ministry through prayer, fasting, & almsgiving Holy Week (the last “week” of Lent) begins with Palm(Passion) Sunday Opportunity for a personal retreat focused on these mysteries Holy Thursday (Mass of the Lord’s Supper) ends Lent & begins the Triduum Chrism Mass Holy Thursday morning or transferred to earlier in week Renewal of clerical promises to bishop Blessing of Oil of Catechumens, Oil of the Sick, & Sacred Chrism Entering more fully into Sacred Time Attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper &/or the Chrism Mass Contribute to the collection for the poor Read & reflect on the readings for the liturgy beforehand Fast & free yourself from unnecessary distractions Spend time with Jesus in the chapel of repose after the liturgy Construct an altar or sacred place in your home & decorate it accordingly

Article 47 cont.: holy thursday Liturgical Highlights of the Holy Thursday liturgy Presentation of the Oils Presented by parish members to show the connection between diocese/bishop & parish Pray for those who will use and receive oils—Sacraments oils used in (B, C, HO, A) Washing of Feet 12 members of the parish (men?) Call to ministry of service—especially ordained (contra clericalism) Dismissal of the Elect Adults to be Baptized/received into the Church at Easter Vigil dismissed b4 intercessions Collection for the Poor 100% goes to poor not parish administration—Operation Rice Bowl or other collections Transfer of the Eucharist Eucharist left from Holy Thursday & for Good Friday are transferred to chapel of repose Procession or community prayer in the chapel until midnight are optional Remembers Jesus’ time in the Garden of Gethsemane, arrest, & waiting over night The Paschal Fast 1 full meal on Good Friday (or until Vigil Saturday night) & 2 smaller meals—laws Along with prayer & almsgiving, helps us enter into the sacred mysteries

Article 48: good friday Good Friday—day of sadness & hope; hope stronger so “good” Solemnity of day expressed through lack of Church adornments No decorations, statues, holy water, altar adornments, song… 4 part service (not mass—only day) begins in silence between 12—3pm Liturgical highlights of the Good Friday liturgical service Liturgy of the Word Isaiah, Hebrews, John’s Passion account (often narrated in parts)—listen Intercessions Longer, more formal, usually sung, 10 (Church, pope, clergy, laity, those to be Baptized, XTN unity, Jews, non-Christians, leaders, special need) Veneration of the Cross—single cross Solemn procession with song by cleric; kiss/touch/bow/genuflect… Communion Simple ritual not a full liturgy; from Holy Thursday; end in silence Entering more fully into Sacred Time Attend the celebration of the Lord’s Passion liturgy; fast; attend the Stations of the Cross and/or Seven Last Words services; pray along with the intercessions; read and/or reflect upon the readings and/or the Lord’s Passion
