Listening and Speaking Week 2 Unit 1 and Note taking

Quick Warm up 5 minutes In groups of 3-5, generate a list of words that describe or that pertain to weather. What are strange weather phenomena? What types of unusual weather do you know?

Weather What is your favorite type of weather? What was the most beautiful weather you have ever seen? What is your least favorite weather? What was the worst weather you have ever been in?

Next week Monday – there is no class September 12. You should 1) attend a Tuesday class if you are free OR 2) You can do Unit 2 at home. I will post the listening files on engrade. Note Taking Rather than listening to the text to write down only the answers – we will focus on your listening skills. The best way to improve listening skills is to learn to take decent notes. Get your notebook out. Write down key words of what you hear.

When listening Before listening, look over your book to see the information you will need to listen for. We will skip TASK 4 because I cannot do two silly voices.

University Based on movies, TV, and books, talk about how this university (SWUST) is different from how you thought university life would be. How is it the same as you expected? If you could attend another university for a semester, what would you look for in your ideal university?

Get into groups of 3 or 4 In a group, talk about what you would change at SWUST to improve it. What does SWUST do well? How could things be better for students? Is there a way for students to improve the university they attend? What can students do to make the university experience more positive?

One last thing . . . In China, how do you address a teacher? Do you call them by their family names or by their given names? In America, just like in China, it is rude to call a teacher by his or her given name unless the teacher requests that you do so. Emory is my family name. It is not my given name. You should not just call me Emory. You can call me Ms. Emory, Professor Emory, or address me as teacher (though in English, this sounds strange).
