Main activity in particle physics LHC Fixed target experiments Anti-protons, anti-hydrogen Other activities ISOLDE (nuclear physics, solid state physics,…..) Biomedical studies (ACE) “Meteorology” (CLOUD)

CERN’s Mandate: building and running particle accelerators The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be the most powerful instrument for the investigation of particle properties ever built. Four large underground caverns for the detectors. The accelerator that produces the highest particle energy of movement in the world. The most intense beams for particle collisions. The LHC will operate at a temperature below that of the outer space.

Around 9000 of the 17000 accelerators operating in the World today are used for medicine. Courtesy of IBA

Detector applications in other fields PET (Positron Emission Tomography) for localising and studying certain types of cancer.

Computing The Web The Grid

Some details on the visit: Split into 2 groups LHCb and SM18, ALICE and SMI2 guides from the experiments and magnet group at the locations half of the group goes to the magnet activity, the other to the experiment then we interchange
