Presentation transcript:

Modelling and simulation of wave impact and interaction with offshore wind turbines Motivation and Background: A vertical axis wind turbine can absorb wind energy regardless of wind direction, implying a design with fewer moving parts for facing the blades towards the wind direction. The studied wind turbine is designed for offshore placement, on deep water where the wind is strong. This thesis is aiming for evaluating and simulating wave impact on the floating wind turbine, so called fluid-structure interaction (FSI). Objectives: Perform a literature review of previous work performed on wave impact on large structures, build an understanding of the physics. Develop with the support of CAE engineers a model for CFD and FSI simulations. Evaluate the model and load cases by performing CFD and FSI simulations. Recommend design(s) based on results achieved in literature study and simulations.
