Presentation transcript:

We Have a Problem…

Problem: Under-Resourced Clinics in Underserved Communities Clinics are under-resourced and understaffed. Clinics are crowded with patients, oftentimes more than the clinic can handle. Patients experience severely long wait times in clinic. Doctors are under-resourced and overworked. Primary care physicians barely have 15 minutes to meet with the patients. More than half of the patients leave their primary care visits not understanding what the doctor has told them.

Patient Wait Times

Patient Wait Times: Limited Resources Lead to Inefficiencies in Patient Flow

Where is this happening? Clinic: Olive View-UCLA Medical Center OVMC is a public LA County hospital. Not a private hospital like RRMC. Olive View serves as the safety net to provide essential medical care to underserved communities in LA.

Additional Clinics: Mid-Valley Comprehensive Health Center Harbor-UCLA Medical Center MVCHC and HMC are both additional public LA County hospitals that serve patients from underprivileged communities.

We Have the Solution!

What is iCareX? An innovative care coordination organization that utilizes student health coaches to improve the efficiency and value of medical services to patients. iCareX Care Coordinators serve at the “X” factor and bridge the gap between doctors and patients. Mission: To improve the quality of healthcare for underserved populations. Organization founded by Dr. Tony Hung, MD, MBA. Project spearheaded by students at UCLA. Project guided by residents of the OVMC Primary Care Clinic.

Some of Our Extensive Network of Medical Staff and Alumni Tony Hung, MD, MBA John Sy, MD Betty Lai, MD Elliot Ho, DO And more! Our network of medical staff and alumni are always available to provide advice and mentorship to members.

What Will You Do as a Health Coach? Help patients gain the knowledge, skills, tools, and confidence to become active participants in their own care. Shifting the medical paradigm from directive to collaborative. Work with doctors and patients to ensure that patients understand, agree with, and participate in the management of their conditions. Most efficient usage of the patient’s wait time.
