Three large two-day meetings (start, mid, end of network) General Meetings Science Meetings Technical Meetings ESM Usage Workshop Emerging scientist Three large two-day meetings (start, mid, end of network) Discuss the current and future state of atmospheric chem. Managed by network lead, the steering committee and local host Objectives: Bring together the community in one place and time Create formal and informal interactions Discuss the state of the science atmospheric chemistry Identify topics for future science / technical meetings Develop atmospheric chemistry community response to NERC/MO/Global ESM agenda

Focused 1 day science meetings Topics decided at the general Meetings Technical Meetings ESM Usage Workshop Emerging scientist Focused 1 day science meetings Topics decided at the general Meetings Lead by an enthusiastic mid-career scientist Engage with international community Objectives: Discuss science issues Identify the state of the science Identify potential solutions for UK atmospheric chemistry and ESM Develop a roadmap towards these solutions Cash to support UK and international participation

Chosen 3 topics at this point. Others have been suggested. General Meetings Science Meetings Technical Meetings ESM Usage Workshop Emerging scientist Chosen 3 topics at this point. Others have been suggested. Biogenic emissions, chemistry and impacts Gerd Folbeth Met Office What chemistries do we need in an ESM? Alex Archibald University of Cambridge How do we simplify atmospheric chemistry? Andrew Rickard NCAS Outputs will be a roadmap to future projects and development work

Focused 1 day science meetings General Meetings Science Meetings Technical Meetings ESM Usage Workshop Emerging scientist Focused 1 day science meetings Discuss “non-science” technical issues such as Chemistry integrators Implementation of Emissions Diagnostic processing Model Governance

Forms outside to suggest meeting topics General Meetings Science Meetings Technical Meetings ESM Usage Workshop Emerging scientist Forms outside to suggest meeting topics Or contact me (mat.evans@york.ac.uk) Need people to lead these meetings Can provide the initial incentive for future grant applications

Lead Luke Abraham, NCAS Cambridge General Meetings Science Meetings Technical Meetings ESM Usage Workshop Emerging scientist Designed to encourage the use of the current NERC / MO ESM by the atmospheric chemistry community. How to use the model? How to use the output? Lead Luke Abraham, NCAS Cambridge together with ongoing efforts within NCAS and NERC. Questionnaire outside http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/L2BFQDZ

Support training activities in their host institution General Meetings Science Meetings Technical Meetings ESM Usage Workshop Emerging scientist Designed to bring together the next generation of Atmospheric Chemists with an Earth System perspective. Support training activities in their host institution Create a peer-support group

Intercomparison meetings Large number of international activities for model inter-comparison Hard to get funding to attend The network has money to support people to go to these meetings Suggestions for meetings to support through travel bursaries….

http://www.ncas.ac.uk/vsp

What can the network do now? Support our PDRAs. Identify topics for meetings (science / technical) Use the meetings to identify projects for people to work together in the future (grant applications) Support people to engage in the global model validation exercises. Make suggestions for future ESM development Make suggestions for National Capability activities

Next General Meetings Grant proposal timeline: Oct 2012, Sept 2013, Sept 2014 NCAS Chemistry/Climate meeting March 21st /22nd Go back to NERC to extend the ACITES grant to 3 years and spread meetings out?
