Graduate Faculty Full Membership Tenure Track Position Complete Graduate College Orientation A full member of the graduate faculty can teach at the graduate level up to and including the highest research degree level they achieved. A full member of the graduate faculty may be the chair of a program of study committee (and therefore serve as the major supervisor of the student) for the degree level (doctoral or masters level) up to and including the highest degree level they achieved. A full member with a masters level degree can co-chair a PhD committee as long as the other co-chair is a full member with a doctoral level degree. A full member of the graduate faculty can serve as a member on any program of study committee.

Graduate Faculty Associate Membership Non-tenure track faculty members may be nominated for Graduate Faculty Associate Membership by any Full Member of the Graduate Faculty. Associate Members of the graduate college must have demonstrated competence for pursuing creative work by completing a research doctorate or the highest degree appropriate to the discipline from an accredited or international recognized institution. In rare circumstances, individuals without the defined degree requirement may be eligible for Graduate Faculty Associate Membership when they have a demonstrated record of impactful creative work to establish equivalent tested experience.

Graduate Faculty Associate Membership Nomination Faculty vote in program or major Review of Graduate Faculty Membership Committee with recommendation to College Administration Term of 5 years or as long as faculty status is maintained Renewal can be for a permanent appointment after a process identical to the first appointment, except that review will include participation in the previous appointment.

Other items Individuals seeking a graduate degree at ISU cannot serve as graduate faculty Considering “tested experience” Confirming equivalent experience for the appointment requires “tested experience in that it includes a breadth and depth of experience outside the classroom in real-world situations relevant to the discipline in which the faculty member would be directing student” (from page 4 in the HLC report entitled “Determining qualified faculty through HLC’s criteria for accreditation and assumed practices, Higher Learning Commission, March 2016). Tested experience used as equivalence for the credentials should be established for specific disciplines. A record of impactful leadership in developing research, scholarship, and achievement consistent with the program should be required.

Intent It has never been the intent of the GFMC to remove individuals from their current status. We also see that the transition to Associate member could be as terms of current term members expire. The GFMC has proposed changes and it is up for review by Graduate Council. In addition, the proposed changes might take time to implement with the current IT systems. Finally, some monitoring of responsibilities of graduate faculty members should be monitored within programs.

Teaching It is the intent of the committee that graduate faculty members can be assigned to teach 500 and 600 level courses and that this can be evaluated by the DOGE and or Department chair. If the Council agrees, we can add this to the responsibilities statement. The only restriction that we might consider is 699 (research) credits.

Associate Member Duties Include DOGE and DOCS? Serve as sole committee member in programs allowing that option?

Administrator Request to include Vice Presidents of Research, Extension, and Outreach (added to paragraph that includes President, Provosts, etc).

5 Old Business Chapter 9 Revisions — with the University Counsel for review. (pending) Chapter 10 Revisions, Post Doc Grievance Process – Posted in the Handbook

5. Old Business c. Update on Statement of Inclusivity & Tolerance “Campaign of Welcome” from GPSS For Graduate Council review Ashton Archer, GPSS Vice President Campaign of Welcome

5. Old Business d. English Language Proficiency Requirement GC Discussion – No Policy Decision or Vote Today Discuss to gauge GC consensus for granting latitude to Dean Graves over summer to review exceptions Plan to formulate policy in the Fall Rough Starting Proposal: In lieu of TOEFL Exam – for “professional” and/or “non-thesis degrees” only 1) an oral interview with DOGE to determine English proficiency; 2) followed by an admissions status of "provisional" to allow them to register for classes; 3) the required completion of 9 graduate credits with a B or higher, after which the student's status would be changed to "full."

5. Old Business E. Renumbering of Statistics Courses GC Member – Karin Dorman 401 and 447 are being renumbered to 500-level now (i.e. the next catalog, 2018). A plan in place to re-number other current 400-level courses to dual 400/500 numbers. Will take another year.

6. New Business a. 2017 – 2018 GC Meeting Day – Wednesday? b. Discuss wording of new statement that is required to be included on title page for theses and dissertations: “The student author and the program of study committee are solely responsible for the content of this thesis. The Graduate College will ensure this thesis is globally accessible and will not permit alterations after a degree is conferred.”
