Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 June 25, 2017 July 9, 2017

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper We are looking at “true worship” – John 4:24 5 specific acts found in New Testament: Prayer Singing Instruction Giving Lord’s Supper

Worship Through the Lord’s Supper 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

Worship Through the Lord’s Supper 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

Worship Through the Lord’s Supper Matthew 26:26-29 26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." 27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

Worship Through the Lord’s Supper Other Passages: Mark 14:22-25 Luke 22:19-20 Biblical Names for the Lord’s Supper: Breaking of Bread – Acts 2:42 To Break Bread – Acts 20:7 The Lord’s Table – 1 Corinthians 10:21 The Communion – 1 Corinthians 10:16 The Lord’s Supper – 1 Corinthians 11:20

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper Lord’s Supper is… …a Discernment.

A Discernment Discern – DIAKRINWN – “to look through” 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

A Discernment It is human nature to forget things. Partaking of the Lord’s Supper in this way helps us keep all the facts clear, straight, and focused. It also: Connects us to the past. Gives meaning to the present. Inspires hope for the future.

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper Lord’s Supper is… …a Discernment. …an act of Separation.

An Act of Separation 1 Corinthians 10:21 - You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord's table and of the table of demons. 2 Thessalonians 2:14 - to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:16 - and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper Lord’s Supper is… …a Discernment. …an act of Separation. …a Communion.

A Communion 1 Corinthians 10:16 - The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

A Communion Romans 6:3-4 - Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Matthew 26:29 - But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

A Communion Therefore, each Lord’s Day when we come together to partake of the Lord’s Supper We are having a fellowship feast with Christ. The Lord’s Supper is NOT a meaningless act.

Repent - Acts 8:22, Revelation 2:5 Invitation Christians Repent - Acts 8:22, Revelation 2:5 Confess - James 5:16, 1 John 1:9 Pray - Acts 8:24, James 5:16

Invitation Non - Christians Hear – Romans 10:17, Acts 18:8, Believe – Romans. 10:9-10, Hebrews 11:6 Repent – Luke 13:3,5 Acts 17:30 Confess – Acts 8:37, Matthew 10:32 Be Baptized – Acts 2:38, Romans 6:3-5 Be Faithful – Revelation 2:10, Hebrews 10:35

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper Lord’s Supper is… …a Discernment. …an act of Separation. …a Communion. …an act of Remembrance.

An Act of Remembrance Luke 22:19 - And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." What are we to remember?

An Act of Remembrance What are we to remember? His Name - Philippians 2:9 His Works – Colossians 1:14-18 His Love – Ephesians 3:18-19 He Arose – 2 Timothy 2:8 He Reigns – Hebrews 4:14

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper Lord’s Supper is… …a Discernment. …an act of Separation. …a Communion. …an act of Remembrance. …a bond of Fellowship.

A Bond of Christians Fellowship 1 Corinthians 10:17 - For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread. The Lord’s Supper calls the body of Christ together as one.

A Bond of Christians Fellowship Thinks about this: They shared one heart and one mind. When one suffered, all suffered. When one was weak, all were weak. When one was built up, all were built up. Acts 20:7; 2:42

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper Lord’s Supper is… …a Discernment. …an act of Separation. …a Communion. …an act of Remembrance. …a bond of Fellowship. …a powerful Proclamation.

A Powerful Proclamation 1 Corinthians 11:26 - For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. What exactly does partaking of the Lord’s Supper proclaim?

What does partaking of the Lord’s Supper proclaim? The Vital facts of the Gospel – 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 Christ Died for us – Romans 5:8 Christ is Alive – Hebrews 1:1-4 Christ is Coming – John 14:1-4 Judgment is Sure – Acts 17:30-31

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper Lord’s Supper is… …a Discernment. …an act of Separation. …a Communion. …an act of Remembrance. …a bond of Fellowship. …a powerful Proclamation.

Worship Through Partaking the Lord’s Supper We partake of the Lord’s Supper on a weekly basis. We have the privilege to do something which those in many denominations only do once or twice a year; remember the Lord’s death with a feast!!
