Open Science and Research Initiative 2014-2017 Ministry of Education and Culture initiative for the promotion of information availability and open science Goal is to make Finland a leading country in openness of science and research by the year 2017 The initiative scope includes research publications, data, and methods Several open science services are offered by the Ministry to researchers openscience.fi
Open Science and Research services Services offered by the Ministry of Education and Culture Services provided by various partners, incl. CSC Services free of charge to end-users Services recommended by research funders, e.g. the Academy of Finland Existing services are developed continuously and new services piloted within the initiative
For whom are the services offered? The services can be utilized by a single researcher, a research group or a research network operating across organizations Research organizations can offer their data to be published in the services and utilize their storage quota The Ministry of Education and Culture offers the services to the actors in the Finnish research system so the services are free of charge to end-users
Why use the services? Risks related to data loss and misuse decrease Data are safely stored for reuse and have a permanent identifier enabling e.g. citation You may use others’ data and share your own facilitating collaboration in research groups and between organizations Openness increases the visibility of research Support for data policies and answers to funder requirements Several services and customer support free of charge
What can one do with the services? Open science services support various stages of the research process and levels of openness You can store, describe and share your data You can also search and utilize data from others Data is managed within the service portfolio using unique and permanent identifiers The descriptive information enables controlled data sharing and ensures that the author and owner of data gain merit
Services support stages of the research process Open data publishing platform Data management planning tool Digital preservation service for research Research data finder Research data storage service
Data Management Planning Tool DMPTuuli
A tool for researchers and research organisations for creating data management plans (DMP) Assists in data management planning at all stages of research projects Includes generic DMP guidance and additional guidance provided by research funders, organisations and disciplines Produced in the national Tuuli-project with a user driven approach Service is based on the open source DMPonline tool produced by the UK’s Digital Curation Centre Sign up and log in: www.dmptuuli.fi
DMPTuuli enables Generating structered DMP’s assisted with guidance Using of appropriate templates with guidance provided by research funders, organisations and disciplines Sharing and writing plans together with collaborators Exporting DMPs in different formats: csv, html, json, pdf, text, xml, docx
Creating plans Choose your home organization (not mandatory) Choose funder (TEKES, Academy of Finland, Horizon 2020…) Organisaation, rahoittajan ja kansalliset ohjeet
Project details and guidance Fill in the project details Choose guidance: e.g. provided by your own institution or Finnish Social Science Data Archive Organisaation, rahoittajan ja kansalliset ohjeet
Writing plans Answer questions Guidance in the right-hand panel Guidance displayed according to the selections: guidance from funder, from your own organisation etc. Add comments or notes by using the ”Share note” tab.
IDA research data storage service
IDA is a research data storage service for researchers in Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences as well as researchers funded by the Academy of Finland Several user interfaces and secure storage procedures designed for stable datasets and raw data Data owners decide on the openness and data usage policy Will form part of the long-term preservation system of research data Continuous service offered by MINEDU and produced by CSC openscience.fi/ida
IDA enables Storage space usage via browser, command line or file transfer program Secure storage procedures with data replication and a geographical distance to the organization Project-based access to data e.g. within a research group, also across organizational boundaries Automatic creation of metadata (e.g. persistent identifiers assigned) and data publishing when desired Data stored in IDA are among the first candidates for the long-term research data preservation service
Becoming an IDA user Submit your application online: User rights quotas assigned to universities, universities of applied sciences and Academy of Finland Division based on Ministry indicators Universities manage their quotas independently A contact person at the university approves the project applications Submit your application online: Instructions: http://openscience.fi/how-to-apply-for-ida-storage

Research data finder
Etsin is a research data finder service Centralized service for data on research data Offers information on existing research datasets and possibility of reuse of data regardless of storage location Contains only descriptions of the data (metadata), does not store the data itself Continuous service offered by MINEDU and produced by CSC etsin.avointiede.fi
Etsin enables Searching for research data independent of storage location Describing your own dataset with guidance and tools Enhanced discoverability of datasets via rich descriptions Receiving a permanent identifier for datasets when needed Accumulation of merit to researchers through increased visibility and possible data re-use Creation of application forms for data access when applications for re-use are welcome from other users
Etsin metadata Metadata on research datasets is collected into Etsin Describing your dataset with metadata requires authentication with your Haka credentials Metadata can be searched and browsed openly The better a dataset is described, the easier it is to find and utilize When possible under law and agreements, publishing the data itself is recommended

AVAA open data publishing platform
AVAA is a platform for publishing open research data Enhances accessibility and reusability of open research data Serves both the producers and users of open data Offers applications and interfaces for utilizing open data Continuous service offered by MINEDU and produced by CSC avointiede.fi/avaa avaa.tdata.fi
AVAA enables Utilizing open research data Extends data storage service functionalities with e.g. data download, filtering, visualization and API tools Downloading data from IDA whenever data is open or user is entitled to access it Using open source tools in development with code published Publishing your own data in AVAA and developing specific access tools for it together with the service experts
