Std. 10 Plants Foldable Distinguish between monocots and dicots, angiosperms and gymnosperms, and vascular and nonvascular plants.
Monocots vs. Dicots Monocot seeds include grasses, such as corn and rye, and grains such as wheat and rice. A monocot seed contains one cotyledon, or seed.
Roots of Monocots have fibrous roots, which spread out in all directions. Dicots have “taproots”, one main root.

Xylem vs. Phloem

LO´s Be able to identify xylem and phloem tissue in monocots and dicots Know difference between xylem and phloem tissue in stem and roots

Monocots - Dicots

Monocots - Dicots Monocotyledons (Cotyledon= seed leaf, first leaf of a plant to develop): Grass, corn, weeds Dicotyledons: Sunflower, apple trees, tomatoes

Xylem - Phloem Xylem: carries water through the plant, found at the inner part of a vascular bundle Phloem: carries phloem sap through the plant, found at the outer part of a vascular bundle

Roots Monocot root Dicot root Number of xylem and phloem numerous (8 to many) Xylem vessels oval or rounded Pith large and well developed Number of xylem and phloem groups limited (2-6 or 8) Xylem vessels angular or polygonal (=vieleckig) Pith absent or very small

Stem Monocot Dicot Vascular bundles are not arranged in a circle and have different sizes Vascular bundles arranged in a circle and have similar size Source: http://www.majordifferences.com/2013/03/difference-between-dicot-and-monocot.html , 1.10.15
