Scheme of Redemption
Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet
Main concepts of our study "Scheme of Redemption" The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as a novel, with 66 different chapters The real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin
Main concepts of our study Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – The Background of Redemption Genesis 12-50 – Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph Exodus 1-12 – Slavery In and Judgement On Egypt Exodus 13-18 – Two Month Journey to Sinai Exodus 19-Numbers 10 – One Year at Sinai
Recap Moses up on Mt. Sinai for 40 days, getting the law from God After Moses had been up on the mountain for 40 days, Israel demanded a “god” to lead them into the promised land Discussed the worshipping of idols, and how it’s possible for something applicable to Christianity to be an idol Moses’s entreaty for God to not to destroy the people
Moses responds to golden calf Exodus 32:15-17 – Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets which were written on both sides; they were written on one side and the other. The tablets were God’s work, and the writing was God’s writing engraved on the tablets. Now when Joshua heard the sound of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a sound of war in the camp.” But he said, “It is not the sound of the cry of triumph, Nor is it the sound of the cry of defeat; But the sound of singing I hear.”
Moses responds to golden calf Exodus 32:19-20 – It came about, as soon as Moses came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing; and Moses’ anger burned, and he threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain. He took the calf which they had made and burned it with fire, and ground it to powder, and scattered it over the surface of the water and made the sons of Israel drink it. * The water was a brook that came down the side of the mountain (Deut 9:21)
Moses responds to golden calf Do you see any symbolism in Moses breaking the tablets? The broken covenant Just a month earlier, they all together committed to obeying God Yet here they are making a direct violation of the 1st commandment of “you shall have no other gods before me”
Aaron’s response Exodus 32:21-24 – Then Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you, that you have brought such great sin upon them?” Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord burn; you know the people yourself, that they are prone to evil. For they said to me, ‘Make a god for us who will go before us; for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them tear it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.”
“Out came this calf!” What is Aaron doing here? Making excuses to justify his sin Perhaps a little con-artistry? Aaron seems to be suggesting that a miracle occurred Do we ever make up excuses for our sins? What is the lesson for us here? Healing can begin once we own our sin – not an easy thing to do!!! Best to not put yourself in such a position in the first place! It’s not worth it!
Moses punishes Under instruction from God, Moses gathered the Levites and commanded them to strap on swords, and to go throughout the camp slaying various individuals. 3,000 died 32:29 – Then Moses said [to the people], “Dedicate yourselves today to the Lord—for every man has been against his son and against his brother—in order that He may bestow a blessing upon you today.” Moses saying that their sins are destroying their brethren. What truth!
1 Corinthians 5 – Danger of sin 1 Corinthians 5 – It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father’s wife. You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present.
1 Corinthians 5 – Danger of sin In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened.
1 Corinthians 5 – Danger of sin For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world.
1 Corinthians 5 – Danger of sin But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.
Moses intercedes Exodus 32:30-32 – On the next day Moses said to the people, “You yourselves have committed a great sin; and now I am going up to the Lord, perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” Then Moses returned to the Lord, and said, “Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a god of gold for themselves. But now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!”
Consider Paul’s concern Romans 9:1-5 – I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever
The Lord responds to Moses Exodus 32:33-35 – The Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. But go now, lead the people where I told you. Behold, My angel shall go before you; nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.” Then the Lord smote the people, because of what they did with the calf which Aaron had made.
The Lord responds to Moses Exodus 33:1-3 – Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your descendants I will give it.’ I will send an angel before you and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite. Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, because you are an obstinate people, and I might destroy you on the way.”
The Lord responds to Moses Exodus 33:4-6 – When the people heard this sad word, they went into mourning, and none of them put on his ornaments. For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the sons of Israel, ‘You are an obstinate people; should I go up in your midst for one moment, I would destroy you. Now therefore, put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what I shall do with you.’” So the sons of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.
Moses’s conversation with the Lord Exodus 33:7-11 Describes Moses’s “tent of meeting” which was a tent that Moses set up far outside of the camp, and it’s where people could go to seek the Lord’s counsel Whenever Moses would enter, a pillar of cloud would descend at the entrance and the Lord would speak with Moses, face to face as a man speaks to his friend (vs. 11)
Moses’s conversation with the Lord Exodus 33:12-13 – Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people!’ But You Yourself have not let me know whom You will send with me. Moreover, You have said, ‘I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people.”
Moses’s conversation with the Lord Exodus 33:14-16 – And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the earth?”
Moses’s conversation with the Lord Exodus 33:17-19 – The Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; for you have found favor in My sight and I have known you by name.” Then Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!” And He said, “I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion.”
Moses’s conversation with the Lord What’s happening here? Moses is feeling stressed He had been told many things by God He had been commissioned to bring Israel to the land of promise God knew him by name God would be with him He had found favor in God’s eyes God had told him that He would send someone with Moses, but the one (Aaron) who was sent just failed MISERABLY (golden calf)
Moses’s conversation with the Lord What’s happening here? Now God is telling the people, due to the golden calf issue, that He’s not going into the land with them! But Moses is now feeling like he’s “in the dark” and like he’s being hung out to dry “You’ve told me that you’re with me, that I’ve found favor in your sight, and you want me to lead the people into the land. Yet now you say you’re not going? Are you kidding me??”
Moses’s conversation with the Lord What’s happening here? Moses is looking for some affirmation that God will still be with him and will still be with the people He’s also looking for some knowledge and wisdom. “Let me know your ways and let me see your glory that I may know you!” Moses really seeking here to truly understand the mind and heart of God
Moses’s conversation with the Lord Exodus 33:21-23 – But He said, “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!” Then the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by Me, and you shall stand there on the rock; and it will come about, while My glory is passing by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by. Then I will take My hand away and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.”
