Robotics Systems Technology 3205 Robotics Overview Robotics Systems Technology 3205

Robot A mechanical device which performs automated tasks, either according to direct human supervision, a pre-defined program or, a set of general guidelines, using artificial intelligence techniques. http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Robotics A machine or device that operates automatically or by remote control. http://www.answers.com/topic/robot An automatically guided machine which is able to do tasks on its own, almost always due to electronically programmed instructions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot

Robot A robot has several but not necessarily all of the following features. It: Moves Senses Reacts Can be programmed Is under human control

Robotics The study, design and use of robot systems for manufacturing . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_robot The science or study of the technology associated with the design, fabrication, theory and application of robots. http://www.answers.com/topic/robotics

Industries that use Robotics Systems The main area in industry that use robotics heavily are manufacturing and fabrication. The number of robots in the entertainment/service area far outweigh any of the other sectors. The common tasks undertaken by robots, and their capabilities dictate the specific industries that use them.

Why use Robots? The most common tasks robots perform are: Dangerous or hazardous Repetitive Requiring precision Bomb disposal and assembly line production are examples of these kinds of tasks. Humans lack the capability, which robots have, to perform the same task, the same way, every time.

Dangerous or hazardous Bomb disposal http://www.securityprousa.com/bodiro.html

Repetitive Assembly line production is an example of this kind of tasks. Humans lack the capability, which robots have, to perform the same task, the same way, every time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xkdc UAWaVY

Requiring precision Robots in the automotive industry are largely used as assembly line workers. With precision programming and steel- reinforced strength, robot arms can piece together major auto body parts in seconds They can do some jobs that would normally require two or three human beings to complete in minutes.

Automotive Industry By using a robot, auto companies reduce the risk of heavy parts falling on humans. http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4572605_how-robots-used-industry.html

Robots in Space Robots are constantly used to make repairs to the space shuttle or any of the space stations in the Earth’s crust. The space industry also uses robots to make precision instruments and parts like lenses for ultra-magnifying telescopes. But most famously, robots are used to explore the atmospheres and surfaces of other planets. http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4572605_how-robots-used- industry.html

Government Use The government likes to use robots to replace human beings when it comes to extreme danger. Robots are often used by the military to handle explosive ordinance situations. If there is a suspected bomb in a facility that is difficult to enter, a robot with a camera can be used to get inside that building and, in some cases, actually disassemble or move the explosives.

Government Use For search and rescue, robots can get inside building ruins and ‘sniff’ out living humans by using infrared cameras and heat sensors. Robots can even hunt mines lurking in the water.

NL Examples A robot named Rosie is helping people on the northern coast of Labrador receive health-care services in their home community http://www.cbc.ca/canada/newfoundland- labrador/story/2010/07/09/nl-rosie-robot- 709.html#ixzz10PGpY1f5

Careers in Robotics Careers in robotics revolve around designing, building, maintaining and operating robots. Design elements would entail careers centered on engineering and electronics. Building would also entail careers on engineering and electronics Maintenance and use of robots are one of the few areas for which specific programs in post-secondary are available. For example, Memorial University of Newfoundland, offers an ROV operator program at the Marine Institute.
