Dead Pulp Vs Dynamic Access Models Investment on Scholarly & Research Journals --------------------------------------------- Dead Pulp Vs Dynamic Access Models

Agenda Aggregation – Concept, Products and Players Pre and Post Internet Access Models for Journal Literature Perquisites of a Resource sharing Consortia for Journal Literature Local Gateways Issues for Round Table Discussion

Aggregation A book is an aggregation of an author’s idea A Journal is an edited aggregation of articles representing ideas from several authors in a discipline or a special topic. Database is a compiled aggregation of several different sources of information with a common thread by a subject or source type A Library is a full-text aggregator of content they buy Internet is the largest public Aggregator of freely available content

Value of Aggregation Access is the primary value delivered by content aggregation. Access without aggregation is like a Library without a Library Catalog or OPAC. Content aggregation process is like developing a road map to content. A map can not be called a good map, unless it has and index to locate. Bibliographic Aggregation is a compilation value that provides searchability for Access

Aggregation Players Bibliographic Full-Text Traditional A&I Producers/Publishers ISI, BIOSIS, CSA, INSPEC, etc. Database Aggregators - Hosting Services Ovid, SilverPlatter, Dialog, STN Subscription Agencies as Gateway Service Providers SwetsNet, RoweCom, Informatics (J-Gat) Full-Text Perpetual Access models with archiving space for the library – Ovid, OCLC Annual Lease Access models – ProQuest, EBSCO

Pre-Internet Access Model SEARCH A&I BIOSIS, MEDLINE USER FETCH ARTICLES Library Document Delivery Agency Online Offline

Post-Internet Access Model SEARCH A&I BIOSIS, MEDLINE USER FETCH ARTICLES Publisher Aggregator Library Document Delivery Agency Online Offline

Seamless Access to Content needs Bibliographic Links GATEWAYS

Bibliographic Aggregation Today Bibliographic Databases With embedded Links to full-text At Publisher sites To Aggregator’s site To Local Library Archive To Document delivery Agency Without embedded Links Third Party Link Service Providers CrossRef SFX from ExLibry (Open URL)

Sharing Access to Journals & e-Journals in a Consortia model – Prerequisites Common bibliographic content base for the journals subscribed by the participating libraries. Common technology Platform for accessing and searching the content Seamless link to full-text at publisher’s site Automatic password authentication Link Management Link to local print holdings Incorporation of Union catalog of participating libraries into the Database Tools for communication between the users and libraries of all participating libraries Willingness and mechanism to share resources

JCCC J-Gate Custom Content for Consortia Customized private portal for accessing the Journals “subscribed” by the Consortia Intranet solution for seamless access to subscribed e-Journals Supports Automatic Password Authentication Links are visible only for journals to which online access rights are secured by the accessing Library. A virtual library model model for accessing and sharing available print journal resources.
