Restorative Justice in Schools

You learn how to communicate and talk out issues using circles. You learn about other people’s life situations. You get to bring a student’s point of view into the conversation and not always just an adult point of view. You gain leadership skills. You have something to look forward to and you can help other people out. If you have a problem that day, you know that you can take care of it – get it done with. Restorative Justice helps in real life situations out of school too.

I try to use it every day as I have conversations with students about their actions. We have some students that have been historically rejected by the school system, and this gave them the chance to be listened to, not judged. I learned about our families, and that they care more than we give them credit for.
