HOW TO FILL OUT ID IN FLORAL DESIGN HAVE YOUR FOLDERS WITH YOU

Common Name What most people call the plant. It is “common” Usually indicated by all CAPITAL letters in your text book This is REQUIRED for you to know at a bare minimum

Scientific Name Also know as the botanical name or Latin name ALWAYS indicated by being written in Italics Refers to the Species of the plant This would make you super cool if you knew both the botanical name and common name… just sayin’

What Makes a Species? A species is a Bi-Nominal Meaning it has TWO parts… ALWAYS Part 1 = Genus Part 2 = Genus + Species

Example California Oat Grass Danthonia Californica Genus Species

Try It! Common Name: Scientific Name: Helianthus annuus Genus: Species:

Color Yes, I know, most plants are “green”! But please tell me what shade of green. Include all other dominant colors in the plant Example: light green, dark green, spotted/textured green. BE SPECIFIC!

Structure Mass Flowers: AKA Focal Flowers Attract the attention of the viewers Usually placed in the center of designs or in the most visible location Naturally big flowers with a round shape and single stem

Structure Continued… Line Flowers: Used for determining the height and width of arrangements (therefore, many tall flowers are used for line flowers) Overall shape is determined by this flower Usually placed first in the vase or container

Structure Continued Filler Flowers Just as it sounds! This flower is used to fill up empty spaces in arrangements Usually grow in clusters on a single stem Often placed after mass flowers

ID #1 Common Name: Yarrow Scientific Name: Genus: Achillea tomentosa Species: Yarrow Achillea tomentosa Achillea Achillea tomentosa

ID #1 Dark Green Stems & Leaves. Flowers may vary: white, yellow, pink, purple. Color: Structure: Characteristics : Filler Flower Flowers are tightly clustered at the top of the stem. Leaves are “Lacey” / “Feather-Like”. Perennial
