INDONESIA An Australian Friend & Neighbour ROOM 3

WHERE IS INDONESIA? Indonesia, with over 18,000 counted islands, is by far the largest and most varied archipelago on Earth. It spans almost 2 million square kilometres between Asia and Australia. With a population of 248,216,193, Indonesia shares land borders with 3 countries: Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Papa New Guinea.  * Archipelago: a sea or stretch of water having many islands.

ECONOMY & CURRENCY Indonesia has generous natural resources, including crude oil, natural gas, tin, copper, and gold. Its key imports include machinery and equipment, chemicals, fuels, and foodstuffs. Major exports include oil and gas, electrical appliances, plywood, rubber and textiles. Currency of Indonesia is the Rupiah

LANGUAGE OF INDONESIA More than 700 living languages are spoken in Indonesia.Most belong to the Austronesian language family, with a few Papuan languages also spoken. The official language is Indonesian (locally known as Bahasa Indonesia), a variant of Malay.

GEOGRAPHY OF INDONESIA

CLIMATE Lying along the equator, Indonesia's climate tends to be relatively even year-round. Indonesia has two seasons—a wet season and a dry season— with no extremes of summer or winter. For most of Indonesia, the dry season falls between April and October with the wet season between November and March.

OUR FRIEND & NEIGHBOUR The Australia-Indonesia Institute (AII) was established by the Australian Government in 1989 to help better contribute to the relationship between Australia and Indonesia and to project positive images of Australia and Indonesia in each other's country. We share trade and many other things like the love of sport in both countries. Indonesia is an important partner in our future.

SPORTS Sports in Indonesia are popular from both the participation and spectating aspect. Popular sport in Indonesia are badminton, football and native Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat. Badminton is arguably Indonesia's most successful sport.

FOOD Indonesian traditional meals usually consists of steamed rice as staple, surrounded by vegetables and soup and meat or fish side dishes Some popular dishes that originated in Indonesia are now common to neighbouring countries, Malaysia and Singapore. Indonesian dishes such as satay, beef rendang, and sambal are favoured in Malaysia and Singapore.

MUSIC Indonesia home to lots of music and music plays an important role in Indonesian art and culture. Gamelan is an important instrument to Indonesia. Gamelan is used for weddings and ceremonies and other major events

INDONESIAN FLAG In Indonesian, this flag is called "Sang Saka Merah Putih" (meaning "lofty bicolor red and white"). The red symbolizes human blood and the white represents the human spirit.
