Understanding Canadians Ipsos Global Impact Study, 2016

Understanding Canadians Canadians increasingly focused on their own challenges over other people From all respondents 62% agree (2016) From all respondents 57% agree (2014) Global average- 55% agree

Understanding Canadians Canadians feel more disconnected than connected to their neighbourhoods 21% more connection (2016) 37% less connection (2016) Global average- 22% agree

Understanding Canadians Canadians overwhelmingly see a need to trust personal intuition 88% agree (2016) 9% disagree (2016) Global average- 83% agree

Familiarity and Trust

Familiarity Only 25% of Canadians claim to be extremely or very familiar with charities Better educated Canadians appear to be even more familiar with charities overall

Familiarity Only 16% of respondents over 65 claimed to be extremely or very familiar.

36% of respondents indicated that they had High Trust in charities. While 27% of respondents claimed to have Low Trust levels.

Familiarity and Trust

Familiarity and Trust

Familiarity and Trust Charities are important to Canadians From all respondents 43% strongly agree Not familiar - 26% strongly agree Extremely/very familiar - 61% strongly agree

Familiarity and Trust Most charities have a positive impact on the cause they are working for From all respondents 27% strongly agree Not familiar - 14% strongly agree Extremely/very familiar - 45% strongly agree

Familiarity and Trust Generally speaking charities operate in an open & transparent manner From all respondents 11% strongly agree Not familiar - 6% strongly agree Extremely/very familiar - 24% strongly agree

Familiarity and Trust Most charities are well run & managed From all respondents 11% strongly agree Not familiar - 5% strongly agree Extremely/very familiar - 25% strongly agree

There is an unexpected decline amongst the most familiar in the areas of transparency and being well run

86% of respondents stated that being well operated and transparent to the public are the number one considerations affecting support of charities

Is information the answer? “More information is not necessarily a good thing, because the more we know, the more questions we develop about what we don’t know” from ‘Organizational Culture and Leadership’ by Edgar H. Schein

Wicked Question How can organizations move people from a place of high familiarity to greater trust . . . . . . when simply providing them with more information and data alone won’t succeed.

Canada is Changing

Volunteers and Older Adults There are close to 15 million older adults in Canada: more than 5 million seniors age 65 and over and close to 10 million baby boomers (45 – 64 years old). Together, they make up 43% of the population.

Volunteers and Older Adults This cohort contributed more that 1 billion volunteer hours in 2010!!

Volunteers and Older Adults Older adults have a lower volunteer rate than younger age groups but contribute, on average, more hours per year.

Immigration in Canada 2011, the National Household Survey estimated the foreign-born population at 6,775,700, representing 20.6% of the total population. This was the largest proportion since the 1931 Census

Immigration in Canada 2011 National Household Survey, Asia (including the Middle East) is now the main continent of origin of the immigrant population, although Africa's share has increased.

Immigration in Canada As well, for the first time since Confederation, China and India (excluding the two special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macao) have surpassed the United Kingdom as the country of birth most frequently reported by foreign-born people

Wicked Question How can organizations re-frame their volunteer offerings to be customized to a changing population. . . . . . when this offering may require a fundamental re-invention?

Looking to the Future…

Fundamental Questions Will economic growth and traditional financing support expanding need? Will charities maintain a productive and symbiotic relationship with the economy?

Outlook is based on forecasting… Demand for the sector, based on demography, culture, families, etc. Economic performance, which supports sector revenue generation

We foresee potential growing divergence between need and revenue

Demand is driven by demographic, cultural & social factors Aging population Increase in single parent families Substance abuse Immigration

Economic growth is likely to slow in the long-term

Lower long-term economic growth, forecast by… The Conference Board Drummond and Associates Parliamentary Budget Office

Analysis asks, what if… Slower economic growth reduces government transfers, earned income, and donations While… Demand for services grows perhaps at an accelerated pace?

We forecast a growing social deficit.

Growing gap between potential revenue and need… The paper does these projections for a number of scenarios and more are possible. Scenarios are What if growth in need is even higher than in base period What if economic growth slows even more than projected What if government policies accelerate long term growth What if the quality growth itself creates problems n- that is growth that is not smart What is growth in donations slows down What if sales of goods and services and memberships are constrained What if accelerated demand grwoth and slower economic growth – this is the scenario presented here.

One realistic scenario predicts possible social deficit of $25 billion in 2026

We need to rethink the relationship between government, business and charities and nonprofits

Wicked Question How can organizations view sustainability and program delivery – and the role of volunteers. . . . . . when the long term outlook will be a more challenging environment?

Celebration and Fun
