Sparta High School Population: 9, 522 Rural area -20 miles east of La Crosse area -Economy based on farming , large factories & military High Transient Community -Military (Fort McCoy) - 350 to 400 students move in & out each year -Federal Impact aid County Seat -Group Home/Foster High SES ~53% Free and Reduced Lunch -40% of students enter workforce upon graduation

Data To Support PBIS Data prior to PBIS and the Spartan Way implementation at Sparta High School: *** SAILS (Alternative School) Enrollment was over 100 students prior to 2009 School Year Total ODRs Enrollment SAILS Bound*** Graduation Rate 2011-2012 1295 710 29 93.7% 2012-2013 1021 676 33 94.9% 2013-2014 1256 700 20 94.2% Add in demographics

Universal Tier I All Students, Staff and Settings Started PBIS implementation 2014-2015 school year: “Spartan Way” Committee with at least one department representative School-Wide matrix (with all areas included) -Student discussions during resource period; “What does being respectful look like?” -Student behavior expectation videos

Challenges Tailoring PBIS to fit a High School model -Last school in the district to implement Spartan Way -Met with local HS that had successful PBIS HS model in place -PBIS conference and networking -PBIS training (Tier I) ***wasn’t done until 2016-2017 school year -Best Effort added to HS PBIS Staff Buy-In: “Students should just know these behaviors” -DATA, DATA, DATA!! -Handbook with training -Each department represented

Universal Tier I 2016-2017 School Year School Improvement Plan goal focused on decreasing tardies at SHS by 20%. -Music between hours (last 50 seconds) -First hour cookies (once a month) -Email sent home to parents about policy change and importance of being on time

Minor Behavior Tracking: The Rationale to Staff Looking for trends in behaviors that are not tracked through Skyward Monitoring minor behaviors Higher student engagement in the classroom Allows collaboration between teachers on successful interventions Goal is for this to be an easy system for teachers to use

Minor Behavior Tracking: The Implementation Subcommittee to implement minor tracking behavior Defining Minor vs Major Definitions for each offense Creation of a Google form Staff training with step-by-step tutorials Minors are monitored every day by Assistant Principal 3 Minors, of the same offense, in 3 weeks = a Major

Minor vs. Major Minor Offenses:  Minor Offenses are misbehaviors corrected “on the spot” (classroom, common areas, etc.). Interventions used to address minor offenses are documented on the Minor Offenses Reporting form. Major Infractions:  Major Infractions are violations which require the immediate attention of administrative staff. The interventions used to address and correct major infractions. Parents/guardians are notified and Skyward Online Discipline Referral form.
