Notes: Pregnancy begins when an egg cell is fertilized by a sperm cell. When a woman becomes pregnant, her monthly menstrual period stops. During pregnancy, the fertilized egg divides again and again, growing rapidly. There are different stages of an embryo and then a fetus inside the mother’s womb.

5. The embryo is the first stage and lasts eight weeks. 6. The next stage is the fetus. A fetus grows legs and arms, as well as internal organs like the heart. 7. Pregnancy usually lasts 40 weeks and is divided into three trimesters (periods of about 12 weeks). 8. The fetus lies in a bag of fluid called the amniotic sac.

9. The mother’s blood passes food and oxygen to the fetus through the placenta, also known as the afterbirth. 10. The umbilical cord runs from the placenta and fetus, carrying blood between them. 11. During pregnancy, a woman gains 30% more blood and her heart rate goes up. 12. A woman’s breasts grow and develop milk glands to produce milk for feeding the baby.

The Stages of Fetal Development

One Month- Week 4: Size of a Poppyseed Right now your little zygote is settling into your uterus... Your baby is an embryo consisting of two layers of cells from which all her organs and body parts will develop.

Two Months - Week 8: Size of a Raspberry Average size: .63 inches, .04 oz. Those little arms and little legs are moving like crazy... Your baby is now about the size of a kidney bean and is constantly moving. He has distinct, slightly webbed fingers.

Three Months - Week 12: Size of a Plum Average size: 2.1 inches, .49 oz. Almost all vital systems are fully formed... By now your baby is about 3 inches long and weighs nearly an ounce. Her tiny, unique fingerprints are now in place. Arms, legs, fingers, toes, brain, nerves are developed and the heart beats. It now begins to move.

Four Months - Week 16: Size of an Avocado Average size: 4.6 inches, 3.5 oz. Eyebrows, lashes, and hair are filling in... Your baby is now about 5 inches long and weighs 5 ounces. His skeleton is starting to harden from rubbery cartilage to bone.

Five Months - Week 20: Size of a Banana Average size: 6.5 inches, 10.6 oz. Boy or girl, genitals are fully formed... Eyebrows and eyelids are now in place. Your baby would now be more than 10 inches long if you stretched out her legs.

Eight Months - Week 32: Size of a Squash Average size: 15.2- 16.7 inches, 2.5-3.8 lb. Sleeping and waking cycles are establishing... Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds. His layers of fat are filling him out, making him rounder, and his lungs are well developed.

Nine Months - Week 36: Size of a Honeydew Average size: 17.2-18.7 inches, 4.2-5.8 lb. Week 40: Jackfruit Average size: 18.9-20.9 inches, 6.2-9.2 lb. Full term! Baby's finally ready for the outside world...
