Restorative Justice

Community of Learners We are getting to know one another and build RELATIONSHIPS! We want to develop a sense of RESPONSIBILITY, since we are a community of learners. You are going to be together for summer bridge. We are learning to Respect each other, our classroom and our school. If something is not right talk about it.

Restorative Justice Circle Agreements Respect the Talking Piece Speak from your Heart Listen with your Heart Speak with Respect Listen with Respect Say Just Enough Honor Privacy Bring Our Best Selves

What is a talking piece? A talking piece is used in circle It is an object that has meaning to the person that owns it. At the beginning of circle, the talking piece is introduced by the owner. He/She explains what it is and why it is meaningful to him/her. Sometimes teachers let you bring your own talking piece You may only speak, in the circle, if you have the talking piece.

Respect the Talking Piece We show that we respect the talking piece when We speak only when we have the talking piece We treat the talking piece with care, like it was our own. We passing the talking piece to our neighbor. We pass the talking piece to the left because that is the side our heart is on.

What does it mean to… Speak from your Heart Speak with Respect What do you think this means? Speak with Respect Teachers allow students to give you their ideas- Chart their ideas, so that they have a visual to help them remember. You will post their answers next to the RJ circle agreement poster. If they do not say anything about the heart then talk about being honest and truthful. If they do not say anything about respect then talk about being mindful of the feelings of others and comments they make that put another person down.

What does it mean to… Listen with your Heart Listen with Respect What do you think this means? Listen with Respect Listen to their suggestions and chart them. If students do not give suggestions talk about listening to understand and to empathize

What does it mean to… Say Just Enough Honor Privacy Bring Our Best Selves Listen to their suggestions and chart them to post next to the statement on the RJ circle agreement posters. Remind students what happens in circle stays in circle.

Community Building Circle We will try our first circle tomorrow. 
