Presentation transcript:

“This cup is the new covenant established by My blood; it is shed for you.” Luke 22:20

When someone hurts us, Jesus says we should: always forgive them sometimes confront them

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and said, “Lord, how many times could my brother sin against me and I forgive? As many as seven times?” 22 “I tell you, not as many as seven,” Jesus said to him, “but 70 times seven (or 77 times).” Matthew 18:21-22

Forgiveness charizomai used 23 times: to graciously pardon Jesus used this word one time (Luke 7:42) And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ. Ephesians 4:32

Forgiveness charizomai used 23 times: to graciously pardon Jesus used this word one time (Luke 7:42) aphiemi Used 143 times 95 times: leave, walk away from 48 times: FORGIVE Jesus used this word 43 times

aphiemi: leave, walk away from (95 times) Immediately they left their nets and followed Him (Matthew 4:22) The robbers beat him up and fled, leaving him half dead (Luke 10:30) aphiemi: forgive (48 times) Jesus said, “You must forgive, not just seven times, but 70 times seven.” (Matthew 18:22) And forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors (Matthew 6:12) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins…. (1 John 1:9)

Forgiveness is the ongoing commitment to: not talk bad TO that person not talk bad ABOUT that person not wish bad ON that person

Forgiveness is the ongoing commitment to: not talk bad TO that person not talk bad ABOUT that person not wish bad ON that person We should separate forgiveness from forgetting emotional healing consequences

When someone hurts us, Jesus says we should: always forgive them (Matthew 18:22) sometimes confront them (Matthew 18:15-17) Above all, maintain an intense love for each other, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8

Three approaches to confrontation Zero-tolerance 1 Corinthians 5:13 Three strikes and you’re out Matthew 18:15-20 Gentle Galatians 6:1-5

When someone hurts us, Jesus says we should: always forgive them sometimes confront them

9 Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11  Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. (Walk away from our offenses; leave them behind – just as we walk away from the offenses of others.) 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13
