SOUTHEAST ASIA

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY The region is made up of a Malay and Indochina Peninsulas and the worlds largest archipelago (Island chain) The Philippines has over 7000 islands alone Indonesia is the largest archipelago The region is on the Equator which gives it a Tropical Wet climate

AGRICULTURE Most of the region practices both subsistence agriculture and commercial agriculture

CULTURE Many diverse cultures The Archipelago create natural barriers against diffusion

EASTERN RELIGIONS Indonesia is the mostly Islamic Japan is a combination of Shintoism and Buddhism Most regions have combinations of Confucianism Family Loyalty Duty/Responsibility Education

ECONOMY All Southeast Asian countries are members of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Free trade zones and well as economic, social and cultural cooperation among countries Much of China’s manufacturing has been outsourced to this region Singapore is the only highly (More) Developed country (MDC) in the region, however, Thailand far more industrialized than most of the surrounding countries Poor infrastructure makes economic growth difficult for many of the lesser developed countries (LDC) such as Indonesia

SINGAPORE Is a microstate (20 smallest) It is an island (63 smaller) Only More Developed Country (MDC) in the region 2nd most densely populated (6500 per mile) Considered the cleanest city in the world

VIETNAM After gain independence from France, Vietnam was split between communism to the north and democracy to the south 1964 the US assisted South Vietnam (do to Containment) 1973 US troops withdraw and Vietnam became communist 1975 changing the city Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City Laos and Vietnam are still communist today
