Cell Reproduction Two types of reproduction: Mitosis: Purpose = produces regular body cells for growth and repair Meiosis: Purpose = produces sex cells.
Comp Book Question & Answer
Cloning Have you ever wished you could have a clone of yourself to do homework while you hit the skate park or went out with your friends? What is Cloning?

Cell Cycle. Asexual Reproduction New cells from existing cells offspring are genetically identical, produced by mitosis.
Cell Clock and Cloning Biology 12. Review of Mitosis:  Mitosis occurs in all body cells (aka somatic cells) except egg and sperm  Mitosis maintains.
MEIOSIS: The Production of Sex Cells *Click for Animation*
Mitosis vs. Meiosis. What is the difference Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not produce a new organism. Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not.
 Which form of reproduction is related to mitosis? Why?  Which form of reproduction is related to meiosis? Why?
Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction Mitosis & Meiosis.
Mitosis/Meiosis Review Quiz. 1. Each human sex cell has a total of ____ chromosomes.
DNA and Cell Cycle. DNA and Chromosomes  DNA is in the nucleus of every living thing.  A Chromosome is coiled DNA.  Humans have 46 chromosomes.
The Cell and Inheritance What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction? What are the differences between mitosis and meiosis? How many.
 All living organisms are made of cells.  Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in all living things.  Cells come from pre-existing cells.
Aim: How do organisms reproduce? Who thinks they can define Reproduction? The process by which living things produce other living things like themselves.
Creature Features. Creature Features – 2/8/16 Key Question: How are traits passed down to offspring? Initial Thoughts:
Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction.  Parent cell first copies its DNA  Then divides into 2 separate cells  New cells have a complete copy of parent’s.

Unit 4: Reproduction and Development
Meiosis and Mitosis Mitosis is the dividing of a cell to make an exact copy of the original cell. Meiosis is the dividing of a cell to make four copies.
Cell Growth and Division
Mitosis The parent cell splits to produce two IDENTICAL daughter cells… each with the same number of chromosomes as the parent (46 chromosomes in humans)

Jurassic Park Cloning Video Clip ~3 minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMsJe3TymqY

1) What is a Clone? A clone is an organism that is genetically identical to the organism from which it was produced.

2) Do the cells of our body make exact copies of themselves? Yes! When? Repair Growth

3) What process ensures that the offspring will be genetically identical? DNA Replication

4) Asexual Reproduction: X X X X Parent Offspring X X Genetic Information (DNA) a) How many parents? b) How does the genetic Information between the parent and offspring compare?

5) Cloning vs. Asexual Reproduction Cloning is a technique that accomplishes the same end result as __________reproduction. asexual What is the end result? The production of offspring with identical genetic information as the parent.

6) Can we clone organisms that normally reproduce sexually? Scientists have recently been able to clone animals.

How is this done?

7) Steps of Cloning: The nucleus from an egg cell is removed. The nucleus of a somatic cell from a donor is removed. The nucleus of the somatic cell is placed inside the egg cell. The egg cell with the new nucleus is placed inside the womb. When the baby is born, it will have the same genetic information as the donor.

8) Why Clone? 1) Clone Stem Cells 2) Revive endangered or extinct species 3) Reproducing a deceased pet 4) Clone humans??

9) How are Identical Twins Formed? Fertilization Mitosis + Sperm Egg Zygote Twin #1 Twin #2

10) Why do Identical Twins look alike? After the cell is fertilized, it begins to divide by mitosis. Zygote Therefore the genetic information is identical in each of the cells.

11) How are Fraternal Twins Formed? + Sperm Egg Zygote + Sperm Egg Zygote

12) Why do Fraternal Twins look different? They are formed from two different sperm and two different eggs. Zygotes
