Do Now: 12/3/12 If we are made up of cells, what functions do you think cells must have in order for organisms to survive? (Think broadly, not just specific to humans.) HW: Start brainstorming for cell city project due Tuesday 2. Give Presentation to parents/ adult at home – be prepared to give that presentation to your class Wednesday! 3. Cell Organelle Worksheet Part 1 Due Weds

What is an organelle? Organelles are the smaller parts within a cell that makes the cell function properly (like the organs of a cell)

What is the nucleus? The nucleus is the large central body of the cell, it is the control center, it directs all activities of the cell. It contains cromatin, which is a form of hereditary material, made up of proteins and DNA.

What is the cell membrane? A structure that forms the outer boundary of the cell and allows only certain materials to move in and out of the cell. It is flexible, made up of a double layer helping to maintain a chemical balance between the materials inside and outside of the cell. Food and oxygen can move into the cell, wastes move out.

What is cytoplasm? A gelatinlike mixture inside the cell membrane. It contains water and chemicals, within the cytoplasm are other structures, or organelles which carry out the functioning of the cells

What is the endoplasmic reticulum? Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is a folded membrane that moves materials around the cell, between the nucleus and the cell membrane. Similar to a system of conveyer belts.

What is a ribosome? Ribosomes are found along the ER that produce proteins. Ribosomes receive directions from hereditary material in the nucleus on how to make which proteins.

What is mitochondria? The mitochondria is where food molecules are broken down and energy is released.

What is a vacuole? Vacuoles are storage areas, they are larger than their partners, the vesicles.

What is the golgi Body? Golgi Bodies are stacks of membrane- covered sacs that package cell products to be moved outside the cell.

What are the lysosomes? Lysosomes contain the digestive chemicals that break down food molecules, cell wastes, and worn out cell parts.

What is the cell wall? A cell wall is an organelle only found within a plant cell, is a rigid structure that supports and protects the plant cell.

What is the cholroplast? A chloroplast is an organelle only found within a plant cell, they are green, and they contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that traps light energy, which is then converted into chemical energy and is stored in sugar molecules.

Let’s draw! We will do a gallery walk around the room. There will be a group that begins at each organelle you will have… minutes to draw. It will be quick, so do your best to keep up! Bring a notebook or something else hard to lean on with you around the classroom.

SWAGG Pass With the following list of organelles, please tell me as much as you can about as many as you can. (What is it’s main function, or you can draw it…) Nucleus, Lysosomes, Chrolorplast, Cell Wall, Mitochondria, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Ribosomes, Vacuole, Golgi Body, Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm

SuperSwagg With the following list of organelles, please tell me as much as you can about as many as you can. (What is it’s main function, or you can draw it…) Nucleus, Lysosomes, Chrolorplast, Cell Wall, Mitochondria, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Ribosomes, Vacuole, Golgi Body, Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm

Independent Practice - Cell City Project Objective: To construct a city whose stores, factories, utilities, and offices are analogous to the parts of a plant or animal cell. Process: 1. Decide if your city will resemble a plant or animal cell. Be certain that the parts of your city clearly make that distinction.

Independent Practice - Cell City Project 2. You then need to create businesses, factories, stores, utilities, schools, government offices, etc. This can be a fictional city that you create or it can be an existing city, like Katy. Their functions should be the same as the functions of the following cell organelles: o cell membrane o nucleus o ribosome o rough endoplasmic reticulum o smooth endoplasmic reticulum o Golgi apparatus o Lysosome (only in animal cell) o Mitochondria o Vacuole

Independent Practice - Cell City Project 3. Give a detailed description of each “organelle” and its purpose in the city. If you choose a plant cell, you must also add a: o cell wall o chloroplasts Project Requirements: 1) A color map of the city (on an 8 ½ x 11 piece of computer paper) including, but not limited to, a scale and key (legend). 2) A thorough written description of each part of the city, that is, what makes each part of the city analogous to an organelle. (Written on a separate sheet of paper.)

Plant Cell

Animal Cell

SWAGG Pass 1.There are two organelles that exist in a plant cell, but NOT in an animal cell, name them in a full sentence. 2. Include information about what these organelles do for plant cells. 3. There is one organelle that exists in an animal cell but NOT in a plant cell, name it in a full sentence. 4. Include information about what these organelles do for animal cells.

Do Now 11/29 Brain Dump! Write as many things as you can recall about plant and animal cells. Don’t stop writing till I say stop Video on cancer cells

Cell organelles cell organelles visual

Exit Ticket / SWAGG Pass 1. List the three main ideas of the cell theory. 2. Explain why the nucleus is so important to the living cell. 3. Describe how cells get the energy they need to carry on their activities. 4. Describe the purpose of a cell membrane.

Do Now 11/30 Name and describe the 4 types of single celled organisms we learned? What does the cell theory tell us? What are the major differences between plant and animal cells? List and describe as many of the organelles we learned as you can.
