Houses of Parliament 国会大厦 Officially known as the New Palace of Westminster,this forest of towers,turrets and chambers,stands on the site of a palace which was a royal residence from the time of Edward the Confessor until the region of Herry Ⅷ.

Big Ben At the northern end of the Houses of Parliament is the magnificent gilded Clock Tower universally known as Big Ben

Buckingham Palace 白金汉宫 Originally built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham,this most famous of royal homes was purchased by George Ⅲ in 1762.When she came to the throne in 1837,Queen Victoria moved the Court here from the Palace of St James,and it has been the London home of the reigning monarch ever since.

The palace is now open to the public and many of the art treasures belonging to the royal family can be seen in the Queen’s Gallery.The Royal News,in Buckingham Palace Road,is also open to the public.It houses the state coachs and the beautiful horses which draw them.

William the Couqueror built the Tower of London as a reminder to the citizens of the Citizens of the City of his unassailable power.At the heart of the complex is the White Tower,looking much as it has done for the last 900 odd years, The Tower of London 伦敦塔

Westminster Abbey 西敏寺 The church contains the bones of St Edward the Confessor as well as the remains of many other famous persons. These include Ben Jonson, Geoffrey Chaucer, Edmund Spenser, John Dryden, Dr Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Robert Browning, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Rudyard Kipling, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Lord Kelvin, Ernest Rutherford,George Friderich Handel, Henry Purcell, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Laurence Olivier, William Pitt the Elder, William Pitt the Younger, William Ewart Gladstone, Clement Attlee, and David Livingstone. Oliver Cromwell was buried in the abbey but Charles II ordered his remains removed.

The British Museum 大英博物馆 The collection which began one of the world’s largest and most varied treasure house was founded in 1753 and ,since then,has grown to include every conceivable kind of artifact from all over the world.

St Paul’s Cathedral 圣保罗大教堂 Sir Christopher Wren drew up plans for a new cathedral on this site almost before the ashes of the old cathedral had grown cold.The building that rose from those ashes is Wren’s masterpiece and has a dignity which the surrounding tower blocks cannot diminish.

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and is its second largest city after Glasgow.
