DESCRIPTION OF NPPO AD CHANGES Functions and Structure   The main function of Plant Quarantine Services (PQS) in Zimbabwe is to monitor and regulate the movement of agricultural produce, so as to protect the country’s agriculture industry by minimizing the risk of introducing exotic pests and at the same time export potentially dangerous pests’ free agricultural produce on overseas markets. The mandate of PQS in Zimbabwe entrenched in the Plant Pests and Diseases Act [Chapter 19:08] which was enacted by the parliament in 1958. The Act is amended from time to time by Parliament to keep abreast with present and future agricultural produce and movement of agriculture produce.

DESCRIPTION OF NPPO AD CHANGES Presently the Plant Pest and disease Act is implemented by Plant Quarantine Services (PQS) in the Department of Research and Specialist Services (DR&SS)  It is under the Division of Research Services

Recent changes Ministry name: Ministry of Agriculture is now Ministry of Agriculture Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Department name: Agricultural Research and Extension Services (AREX) and Department of Agricultural Regulatory Services (DARS) is now Department of Research and Specialist Services (DR&SS)

Emergency Measures Larger grain Borer- Prostephanus truncatus Notifiable pests are announced of their presence by the Minister of Agriculture as when he/she deems appropriate upon advice from the NPPO Fruit fly Bactrocera invadens currently surveillance is underway to determine the pest status of Zimbabwe in regards to this pest

Phytosanitary Requirements, Restrictions, obligations Import regulations are under review to update changes in pest status, scientific names e.t.c
