Definition of Cyberbullying Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites.

Statistics More than 16,000 young people are absent from school because of bullying . - 83% of young people say bullying has a negative impact on their self-esteem. - 30% of young people have gone on to self-harm as a result of bullying . - 10% of young people have attempted to commit suicide as a result of bullying. Over the last three years there has been an 87 % increase in the number of Childline’s counselling sessions about online bullying . - 40% of 7 to11 year old respondents know someone who has been cyberbullied . - 7 in 10 young people aged between 13 and 22 have been a victim of cyberbullying .

Jessica Logan 18 -year-old Sycamore High School senior who sent nude photo of herself to her boyfriend, but the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the photo was sent to hundreds of teenagers in at least seven Cincinnati-area high schools after the couple broke up. The cyber bullying continued through Facebook, MySpace and text messages. Jessica hanged herself after attending the funeral of another boy who had committed suicide. Conclusion: Jessica parents ended up parents filing a lawsuit against Sycamore High School and the Montgomery police because they felt as if the district did not do enough to prevent their daughter from being bullied on the internet and the nude photos going viral by members of the student body. In February they 2012 John Kasich signed House Bill 116, also known as the Jessica Logan Act, into law. The legislation addresses cyber bullying and expands anti-harassment policies.

My Opinion Of Jessica Logan Case This situation could have been avoided if the school would have stepped in took action about where did the pictures come from by like tracking it. So they could have issued out consequences to those students that was involved with sending the pictures out. Jessica’s boyfriend in my opinion should have been the first person to have been issued out his punished for sending out the pictures because they broke up. They started to enforced laws of these actions due to Jessica’s situation. I believe that the school system should be aware of the activities that their students are doing on the web. The law was changed by the Megan Meier foundation being created and the new legislature senate bill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkLKiS4p4xY -

The Tyler Clementi Case 18-year-old Tyler Clementi began sharing that he was gay. Clementi's room mate during his freshman year at Rutgers University, Dharun Ravi, used a webcam in September 2010 to stream footage of Clementi kissing another man. On September 22, 2010, Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge. Conclusion: After Clementi’s death, Ravi and Molly Wei. They used Ravi computer to spy on Clementi, were charged with invasion of privacy. May 2011 Reuters entered for an plea deal only if she testify against Ravi. They ended up convicting him on 15 charges but Ravi earned a early release. The Tyler Clementi Higher Education Anti-Harassment Act would require colleges and universities to have anti-harassment policies and expanded bullying prevention programs. In February 2013, the Star-Ledger reported that the bill was reintroduced in both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives

My Opinion Of Tyler Clementi My opinion on this case is that Dharun Ravi should have been sentenced to jail for Clementi's death because Ravi actions with the webcam caused Tyler to commit suicide because he was embarrassed from what his roommate did to him. I believe that 30-day sentence, three years of probation and 300 hours of community service was not enough for Ravi because he didn’t learn his lessons and don’t believe that his actions were wrong for having his webcam on when Tyler asked for privacy for his date. The Supreme Court's decision on the anti-bias statute directly strikes down on this case. They were very bias when it came to this case it should have been handled in a different way. I wish Tyler mother received some justice with her son’s death. Donate to the Tyler Clementi Foundation, where your support can continue these goals and unite us all to remember Tyler’s memory and prevent future tragedy. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3112163/No-one-gay-relative-no-gay-church-Parents-Tyler- Clementi-open-son-s-death-nearly-five-years-exposure-internet-gay-caused-kill-himself.html

Let’s END Cyberbullying While reading several court cases and their outcomes it appeared that these laws don’t hold to there standards. I believe something needs to be done about this immediately. Our society uses and abuses cyber bullying on a daily basis. I believe there needs to be a higher standard for consequences when cyber bullying is occurred. If everyone come together including educators, law enforcement and the biggest role, the parents, then cyberbullying can be stopped.
