Intolerance in Religion A talk by Norman Ralph President LUU Atheist Society
Intolerance in Religion Found in every major world religion. Used as a control mechanism. Often goes hand in hand with extremist or fundamental religious views. Too often found in moderates and even liberal followers of religions.
Religion and women “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ, the head of every woman is man…” (1 Corinthians 11:3) “For the man is not of woman, but the woman is of man. Neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman created for the man.” (1 Corinthians 11:8-9) “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, not to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence…” (1 Timothy 2:11-14) “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife…Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their husbands in everything.” (Ephesians 5:22-24)
Religion and women cont… “Your wives are a tithe for you, so go into your tithe when you like…” (Qu’ran 2:223) “Men are the maintainers of women…and those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping places and beat them.” (Qu’ran 4.34)
Religion and homosexuals “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman…they shall surely be put to death.” (Leviticus 20:13) Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God…neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor effeminates, nor abusers of themselves with mankind…” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) “For ye practice your lists on men in preference to women…drive them out of your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure.” (Qu’ran 7.81-82)
Religion and the disabled “Whosoever he be…that hath blemish, let him not approach ro offer the bread of his God. For whatever man he be that hath a blemish…a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or anything superfluous, or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded, or a crookback, or a dwarf , or be scurvy or scabbed…that he profane not my sanctuaries.” (Leviticus 21:17-23)
Religion and non-believers “If there come any unto you, and bring not his doctrine, receive him not into your homes.” (2 John 1:10) “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” (Romans 16:17) “O ye who believe! Take not for intimates others than your own folk, who would spare no pains to ruin you, they love to hamper you.” (Qu’ran 3:118)
So what? Some of the world’s most powerful people actually believe this stuff. Religious adults teach these views to their children. Religious schools reinforce these views throughout children’s formative years. The world today is dominated by the issues we have discussed!
