Different Sectors of Media

What Is Media? Media is nearly everything around us, it’s the news, television, radio, films, even the websites and apps we use to stay in touch with our friends, it’s nearly impossible to get away from, in this PowerPoint I’m going to highlight some of the different sectors of media and the companies that capitalize on them.

Print This is the industry of making printed media, such as magazines, comics, books, newspapers and other informative services, however, with the rise of digital media and devices, publishing has adapted to fit in, with e- books, e-magazines, e-comics etc., this is to try and reach the more modern audience, as publishing psychically is slowly fading away. Companies: The sun, Marvel, DC, Daily Mail What We Consume: Magazines, Newspapers, comics Main goal: The main goal of this sector is to inform and intrigue it’s audience so they come back for more. Job Roles: Commissioning Editor (Buying and overseeing different writers, stories or creations for their publisher), Copy Editor (To fix any grammatical or spelling mistakes and to fact check articles/stories before publication), Editorial Assistant (Various administrative tasks and making sure everyone keeps to their schedule and to make sure the publishing company runs smoothly), Journalist (To research and create stories for their publishing company), Writer (to create non fiction pieces for their publishing company, such as stories or poems).

Interactive This is any media that you actually interact with, this can mean video games where you actually affect the outcome of the level, or social media where you can post, like and share things and again actually affect the outcome and look of the page, a lot of other media sectors and integrating into interactive media, as more and more people access it on a daily basis and this is the best way to reach them. Companies : Facebook, Nintendo, twitter, YouTube What We consume: Video games, Twitter, Facebook Main Goal: To make connecting with people easier in general and to help people socialize with others all around the world. Television This is any media product aimed to be broadcast onto a television screen, this ranges from the news, soap operas, competitions, game shows, typically backed by a large production company, it was one of the largest media sectors and had the largest audience, but now it’s being beaten out by other, now rising sectors, due to this, they have now branched out to other sectors to try and maintain it’s audience. Companies: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, MTV, Channel 5 what we consume: News, Realty tv, Soaps, Cartoons Main Goal: To Entertain and Inform to retain it’s audience. Advertising & Marketing This is a unique sector as it cannot exist in and of itself, it has to compliment an existing product to promote it as that is advertising’s only purpose, but as it’s a very useful thing to have, the industry is always needed and always getting money and has no worry of disappearing anytime soon. companies: Abbott Mead Vickers, Adam & Eve, Amaze, Barrington Johnson Lorains What We Consume: Teaser trailers, Cinematics, newspaper ads Main Goal: To make a product seem more appealing to it’s target audience so the product does well.
