Welcome to Back to School Night Mrs. Rihan’s Language Arts & Social Studies

Personal Background 13th year of teaching 6th Year at McElhinney BA: CSU San Marcos Teaching Credential: CSUSM 13th year of teaching 6th Year at McElhinney

Content In Language Arts this year, we will learn to write: Argumentative: write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence using credible resources. Narrative: develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences. Informative/Explanatory: examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through selection, organization and analysis of relevant content. Students will perfect the writing process with daily spelling and grammar practice. In addition to reading several short stories and expository text from our Prentice Hall Literature Book and other outside resources, we might read two core novels: Boy of the Painted Cave and The Cay.  

Social Studies Students will learn about geography, archaeology, and will study the ancient civilizations of: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Israel, India, China, Greece, and Rome.

Classroom Management Rules and Regulations Classroom Supplies Warning Respect:  Your teacher, your peers and yourself. Put-downs, name calling, foul language, and inappropriate body gestures will not be tolerated. no tardies, gum chewing, wearing hats in class, repeated outbursts, excessive talking, or using other students’ materials without permission. School Rule: no jerseys, only DMMS hats. Cell Phones--sent up to the office to be picked up by a parent. Consequences: 3 Strikes Board: Warning Lunch Detention & email home Classroom Supplies Come to class prepared and with the proper materials: * TWO-3 pronged plastic folders * 1 composition book * 1 spiral notebook for LA Warm-Ups * colored correcting pen * PENCILS! PENCILS! PENCILS! HOMEWORK is due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise stated. LATE WORK- I accept late work, but it drops 50%. Won’t accept it after one week. Students are given up to the 6 week grading period to turn in late PROJECTS. It automatically drops one letter grade. Before school Tutoring-take advantage of it if needed! Grading Grades are updated on Aeries. Please do not wait until the last minute to check your child’s grade. Grades are weighted in both classes. Class work/Homework - 25% Assessments- 40% Projects - 35% You set up an Aeries account during registration. If not, refer to the DMMS website. Share your username and password with your child.
