New National Curriculum 2014 The new National Curriculum was introduced in September 2014. Since then the school has implemented the necessary changes to meet these requirements. The following slides identify the adjustments that were made to the curriculum subjects. The biggest change involves our assessment procedures.

Greater Changes Computing Key Stage 1 Safe use of technology. Creating and debugging simple programs. Predict the behaviour of simple programs. Create, organise, store and manipulate digital content. Computing Key Stage 2 Safe use of technology. Design, write and debug programs. Work with variables. Explain how simple algorithms work and detect errors. Understand networks including Internet and how they provide multiple services. Use search technologies and a range of software effectively . Staff Training. Support staff coming in to school to work with staff and children. This will continue

Greater Changes Geography Key Stage 1 – name and Geography locate: continents, oceans, countries and capital cities of U.K. North and South Poles. Identify seasons and daily weather patterns in U.K. (plus previous curriculum) History Key Stage 1 – no major changes Key Stage 2 – children have to develop a chronologically secure knowledge– Stone Age to Iron Age, Roman Empire, Anglo Saxons, Vikings, and an aspect of British History beyond 1066 (e.g. Architecture, Crime and Punishment, Railways) Early Civilizations e.g. Ancient Egypt A non- European Society e.g. Mayans Geography Key Stage 2 Location of countries of the world with a focus on Europe and N and S America Know key features for UK and compare with a European country (plus previous curriculum) Resources purchased both for use by children and planning resources for staff

Greater Changes Science Key Stage 1 As previous curriculum but a much greater emphasis on identifying common plants, and animals. Forces work is no longer included. Science Key Stage 2 As previous curriculum but a greater emphasis on practical scientific methods. Greater Changes Resources purchased both for use by children and planning resources for staff

The Most Significant Changes Mathematics Across both Key Stages mathematical skills and concepts are taught at an earlier stage e.g. Year 1 children will now need to have knowledge of simple fractions. Children are now expected to know all their multiplication and division facts by the end of Year 4. Greater emphasis on quick calculations – mental and written. The Most Significant Changes English Phonics, reading and writing remain largely the same. However, there is a much greater emphasis on spelling and grammar. Children will need to learn and use the correct terminology from Year 1 onwards. There is a much greater range of terminology to learn and understand the application of. A greater emphasis on the spoken word – including learning ‘by heart.’ From 2016, children at the end of KS1 will be tested on their knowledge of grammar. This in fact did not happen as the test was ‘leaked’ and subsequently withdrawn. How we assess at St Mary’s? For each subject and year group there are specific objectives to be taught. We assess against these objectives through : Ongoing Teacher Assessment – talking to children to check their understanding, reviewing books. A different feedback system is being trialled in Y5/Y6 , whereby the children are expected to identify certain elements of a given success criteria in their writing and then respond to verbal feedback.  Use of test papers to inform our teacher assessment judgements in order to get a ‘whole’ picture of the child. Year 6 – writing TA and SATs Yr 2 TA judgements informed by SATs

Writing however is different! Reporting Assessment Findings Experiencing These children have only met a small number of the objectives for that year group in a particular subject area. Developing These children have met the between 25%-75% of the objectives for that year group in a particular subject area. Secure These children are able to demonstrate that they have met over 75% of the objectives for that year group in a particular subject area. Piano player anaolgy Writing however is different!

Writing Children now need to achieve every statement for writing in their year group rather than the assessment being a best fit. This is different to other areas of the curriculum. Accurate spelling and legible, clear handwriting are paramount in securing age-related standards. Children (with the support of their parents) can ensure they achieve this by carefully using dictionaries and word lists, learning given spellings and practising correct letter formation and joins.  Please do not be surprised if your child does not meet age related expectations in writing- this could be easily resolved if the extra effort is put in to learning weekly spellings and practising handwriting.

How can we work together to improve your child’s progress? We will start lessons promptly at the start of the day. You can ensure that your child is punctual and ready to start lessons. We will provide the resources required for your child to complete work in school. You can make sure that your child has a place to work quietly, the correct writing equipment, ruler, crayons and dictionary in order to complete homework. We will keep you updated concerning your child’s progress. You can contact us if you have any concerns that we can help you with. We can ensure homework is set regularly . You can ensure that your child completes homework and returns it on time. We will provide workshops to help you understand how you can support your child in certain areas of the curriculum.
