Where is the source data – could it be examined? Would a search yield elements of the table?; a list of data sets available from EPA emmission and fuel economy test data – good that it is there, but how to use it (note format change in 1999)? Does transportation research in general have data management strategy?

Motive & Opportunity Funders ($600M to UC from NSF in 2010) “The alternative, a ‘go it alone’ strategy, will only lead to dangerous isolation… yielding idiosyncratic, expensive, and ultimately unsustainable infrastructures.” Interest & expertise Allow researchers to focus on research (and benefit from managing data) (New Roles for New Times, ARL, 2011) These are the factors that I see driving the collaboration: Institutions rely on soft funding… agencies have created a new demand, meet the demand or don’t get funded. Approach is to work collaboratively to consolidate expertise and reduce costs Libraries plus, plus Provide an environment that allows researchers to focus on research

What - Why a DMP includes: A DMP adds value by: Content Characteristics: types of data, physical collections, software… Standards: data and metadata format Access: policies for acess, appropriate protection of privacy, confidentiality, security, intellectual property… Sharing: policies and provisions for re-use, re-distribution, if any Archiving: save what - complete or samples, other research products; long-term access Meeting funders’ data mgmt/sharing polices Meeting Journals (Nature, Science, and PLoS) data sharing requirements. Distributing research results to increase citations (Piwowar et al., 2007) A shared, common data set may help researchers collaborate and accelerate discoveries (NY Times, 2010).
