3 classes of matter Elements Compounds Mixtures

3 classes of matter Elements pure made of one type of atom Compounds made of two or more different types of atoms CHEMICALLY combined/bonded together Can be separated by CHEMICAL REACTIONS Mixtures physical combinations of different substances can be separated by exploiting the different physical properties of different components of the mixture.

Types of Mixtures Homogeneous Heterogeneous Sort the descriptions into each class: looks the same throughout the mixture can identify different components components distributed equally components distributed unequally/unevenly solution air brass soil

Types of Mixtures Homogeneous Heterogeneous looks the same throughout the mixture soil components distributed equally can identify different components solution components distributed unequally air brass

What type of mixture is this?

What type of mixture is this? this is a heterogeneous mixture because the components are not distributed equally

How to read a formula H2O NaOH H2 Ag O2 H2SO4 What are the subscripts for each of the following formulas? What if an element doesn’t have a subscript? What information does the subscript tell you?

How to read a formula H2O NaOH H2 Ag O2 H2SO4 What are the subscripts for each of the following formulas? What if an element doesn’t have a subscript? We assume it’s a “1” H2O1 Na1O1H1 What information does the subscript tell you? The number of atoms of each element in a molecule.

What is a pure substance?

What is a pure substance? Pure substances are made of only one type of substance. Elements and compounds are pure substances. Every particle of an element or a compound is identical…..PURE! Mixtures are not pure, they are physical combinations of different elements and compounds.

How do you break down an… Element? Compound? Mixture?

How do you break down an… Element? You CAN’T break an element into simpler parts using natural processes. Compound? compounds are broken into simpler parts through chemical reactions H2O  H2 + O2 Mixture? because they are physically combined, you can use the physical properties of different components to separate the parts of a mixture.

Processes used to separate mixtures: sifting – uses differences in size to separate components filtering – uses very small pores in the filter to separate components. Frequently used in conjunction with solubility distillation – evaporation and condensation of different parts of a mixture. Differences in boiling points are exploited. Physical properties used: magnetism – to separate iron filings solubility melting & boiling points
