Bellwork – 7 de agosto Write down how you would say “Our house.” Write down how you would say “Laura is nice.” Write down how you would say “Their books.” Write down how you would say “My first hour is science class.” Write down 5 Cities or States where you think Spanish Speakers live in The United States of America.

Where do Spanish speakers live in America? There are Spanish speakers living in almost all parts of America. The Census gives us a map every year and tells us other languages being spoken in America and where they live. Let’s take a look and see.

This map tells us where Spanish speakers are living in America This map tells us where Spanish speakers are living in America. Each dot represents approximately 100 people.

What cities have the largest populations of Spanish Speakers? While Arizona, has a large amount of Spanish speakers, the city of Phoenix does not even come close to the amount of Spanish speakers as other American cities! Write down which American city you think has the most Spanish speakers.

The top 3 are… Los Angeles, California. According to the Census, there are 4,413,590 Spanish speakers over the age of 5 in Los Angeles. New York City, New York. There are 3,506,711 Spanish speakers over the age of 5 in New York City. Miami, Florida. There are 2,091,782 Spanish speakers over the age of five in Miami.

In case you are wondering about Phoenix. We have 773,158 Spanish speakers over the age of 5. This makes up nearly 20% of our population (which would mean that nearly 1 out of every 5 people in the Phoenix area speak Spanish!)

La Manzana Grande New York City is one of the biggest cities in the world! They have a total population of 18,919, 983! Nearly 20% of the population speaks Spanish in New York City as well! Meaning that nearly 1 out of every 5 people there speak Spanish!

Nueva York

Entrevista – Interview w/ Martha A friend of mine, a native Spanish speaker from Ecuador, spoke with me recently about what it is like to live in New York City as a Spanish Speaker. Her name is Martha. Q: Martha, what do you think about New York City? A: New York is a beautiful and large city. We are always in a hurry here. It is not difficult to find people who speak Spanish here.

Continuado Q: Why did you pick New York as the city to move to in America? A: I chose New York as my home because this is where my son moved. It was also a good location for my profession as a Sample Maker (she makes dresses for stores and her designs are bought and placed in Stores in NYC). It is the best place to work for me because Manhattan is the center of fashion.

Contiuado Q: What is the difference between your country, Spain, and New York? A: In my country the economy was not very good, and for that reason I moved to Spain. However, after a few years in Spain the recession took place and even though Spain is a beautiful country with a very good quality of life, at that time period the economy was just not good. However, this marvelous country has more stability, and New York is a city where we can find work easily.

Continuado Q: How hard would it be for me to find someone who spoke Spanish if I were in the city and where would the Spanish Speaker typically be from? A: In New York, there are many people who speak Spanish. There are many Latin Americans, many Mexicans, and what I have seen most are people from the Dominican Republic.
