Community Schools Overview

Students in Community Schools will graduate with core content knowledge, they will have acquired key life skills, and developed academic and personal behaviors that set them up for success in college and in life.   This means that Community Schools will be places where children have opportunities to learn, gain skills, create joy and have the experiences that ignite curiosity and allow children discover their passions and talents.

State of Student homelessness – Scale of Challenge – Community schools disproportionately impacted 150 Community Schools 63 High Schools 47 Middle Schools 12 K-8 29 Elementary Schools ~64,000 Students 9,500 #STH in all Community Schools (12% avg) Numbers are much higher; its self reported Many families due to safety concerns and other reasons, do not want to report their housing status.

Big picture – Citywide trends There were over 100,000 students in temporary housing in NYC, as of the 2015/2016 school year. New York City currently has the highest rates of homelessness since the Great Depression. Research indicates that Students in Temporary Housing are more likely to be: chronically absent have negative academic performance suspended more likely to drop out of school Even after regaining permanent housing, the effects of being in temporary housing remain.  GOOD NEWS- Community Schools are very well positioned to provide support to Students in Temporary Housing and make a positive impact.
