What is ARIA Established by Dean Christopher P. Manfredi in 2010, the purpose of the Arts Undergraduate Research Internship Award (ARIA) is to support undergraduate students who undertake research during the summer under the direct supervision of a faculty member. Students contribute to the professor’s research agenda while gaining useful academic research skills. The Faculty of Arts will provide Undergraduate Research Internship Awards, each with a value $2000. These awards are matched by individual faculty members or their departments to provide a total award of $4000 to the student. The ARIA Program is supported by the generous contributions from McGill alumni and the Dean of Arts Development Fund and the Arts Student Employment Fund.

ARIA Library Research Workshop Preparing for a Research internship

Library Workshop More rigorous research levels and great feedback In this 2 hour hands-on workshop students learn skills that they will use immediately, and throughout their academic/professional careers. By the end of the workshop ARIA students will have: Translated their research topic into a powerful search strategy that will uncover relevant information. Been introduced to the most essential subject-specific library resources relevant to their research topic, and to the variety of library services available to them. Been introduced to the bibliographic management software EndNote, and will have populated a database with references related to their research topic. Learned how to critically assess the relevance and appropriateness of the information they found. Learned about the value of disseminating their research, and about library resources to help them publish.

Library Carrels The Humanities and Social Sciences Library also provides personal library carrels (desks) during the summer for all ARIA students. We group these carrels together as much as possible to help break some of the isolation of working alone on a research project, and past ARIA participants have told us that it also helps create a sense of community. If you would like to have your own carrel in the library for the duration of the summer, simply present yourself at the main library services desk in the lobby of McLennan Library, and let them know you are an ARIA student and would like a carrel. The staff at the library services desk has a list of all eligible ARIA students.

Poster Guidelines Deadlines – Poster completed must be submitted to LEA 307 by August 17th. Emailed to aio@mcgill.ca Takes 10 days to print Students must cover the cost of poster printing Recommendation – use McGill’s Printing Service – A group discount will be provided Contact Printing Services and mention it is for the Arts Undergraduate Research Event.

Final Reports Final Report ARIA recipients submit a final report and feedback at the end of their ARIA internship discussing their learning over the summer. Due by August 17, 2017. Submitted via email to anne.turner@mcgill.ca. Report Outline (750 words) A short outline of your project. Tell the reader why you wanted to do an ARIA project. What were your learning objectives. What were some of the highlights? Give some examples. What were some of the challenges that you encountered? How did you overcome them? How do you think ARIA has or will shape your future career and education path? If applicable, please thank the donor who funded your Award. Your report will be sent to your donor in appreciation of her / his contribution.
