$100 – Big Bang How long ago did the Big Bang happen? Around 13.7 or 13.8 billion years ago.

$200 – Big Bang Is the universe contracting or expanding? The universe is expanding.

$300 – Big Bang What was created in the first few seconds after the Big Bang? (Name at least one thing) Time, space, atoms, hydrogen, helium

$400 – Big Bang What are the 3 main types of galaxies? Elliptical, Spiral, and Irregular.

$500 – Big Bang Lambda - Cold Dark Matter model, HSK Theory, primeval atom, primordial atom, cosmic egg What is another name for the Big Bang? (Name at least one)

$100 – Stars What are the people that study stars and space called? Astronomers

$200 – Stars What does a star start off as? A nebula

$300 – Stars Why do all stars appear to be red from anywhere in the universe? Because they are moving away from each other (universe expansion).

$400 – Stars What is a device that produces and records the spectra of stars called? A spectroscope.

$500 – Stars Around how many stars are visible from the Earth with the naked eye? Around 9100 (9096 exactly)

$100 – Our Sun What type of star is our Sun? Our Sun is a yellow dwarf (main sequence) star.

$200 – Our Sun How long does it take light from the Sun to reach the Earth? Around 8 minutes (8 mins 20 secs)

$300 – Our Sun What is the distance from the Earth to the Sun and what is it called? 149.6 million km, and it is called one astronomical unit.

$400 – Our Sun What model did Copernicus formulate? He formulated a model of the universe where the Earth and all of the other planes rotate around the Sun, and the Earth is not the center of the solar system, as many other astronomers of the time thought.

$500 – Our Sun In approximately how many years will the Sun ‘die’? About 5 billion years.

$100 – Our Solar System How many planets are there in our solar system (excluding dwarf planets)? There are 8 planets.

$200 – Our Solar System What is the name of the elliptical path that all of the planets in our solar system follow as they rotate around the Sun? An orbit (each planet has its own orbit).

$300 – Our Solar System What is the biggest planet in our solar system and what is the smallest one? Jupiter is the biggest, Mercury is the smallest.

$400 – Our Solar System How many light years away is the nearest star and what is its name? Proxima Centauri is about 4.2 light years away.

$500 – Our Solar System How many dwarf planets are there in our solar system? There are 5 dwarf planets:  Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris

$100 – Earth’s Moon Is the Moon smaller or bigger than the Earth? The Moon is much smaller than the Earth.

$200 – Earth’s Moon How many different phases does our Moon have? It has 8 different phases : New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent

$300 – Surprise question! What is Doppler’s effect? Doppler’s effect is an increase (or decrease) in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move toward (or away from) each other.

$400 – Earth’s Moon What are tides caused by? Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels, which is caused by the combined effects of gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun, along with the rotation of the Earth.

$500 – Earth’s Moon Approximately how many billion years ago was the moon created? The moon was created about 4.5 billion years ago.

Congratulations! Thank you for playing Juliana’s Jeopardy!
