Totalitarian- Complete and total control over the government and society Dictator- A ruler who takes his position by force and controls the government. Democracy- run by the people Capitalism- free market of selling and buying with little or no government intervention. Socialism- economy is run by the workers and wealth is distributed evenly among society Communism- the government controls the economy and the government. There is no competition or capitalism. Fascism-: a way of organizing a society in which a government ruled by a dictator controls the lives of the people and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the government

Totalitarian Governments TOTAL CONTROL “If you’re not with us, you’re against us.”
1. Totalitarian Government? After World War I countries in Europe were so badly devastated -it was almost impossible to recover. The people were willing to accept anyone who seemed to have an answer to their problems = totalitarian dictators.
2. Communism in the Soviet Union Occurred After the Bolshevik Revolution their socialist government became communist. Land - no longer privately owned-collectivized-owned by groups. Wealth - redistributed to citizens Joseph Stalin used - collectivization and wealth redistribution to take power Secret police force- Stalin forcibly removed ANYONE he thought might oppose him or the Communist Party. Stalin -Five-Year Plans- increase industrialization to increase income- to change from farming to an industrial economy.
3. Benito Mussolini IL Duce or The Leader Seized power in 1922 when he marched into Rome and told King Emmanuel to make him the leader.
3. Totalitarianism in Italy Fascism under Mussolini Mussolini was upset with the outcome of the Treaty of Versailles- thought they deserved more. Benito Mussolini -fix the economy, restore order, build Italy into a great nation. Mussolini created the Fascist Party - followers -the Black Shirts. Using his power –became a powerful dictator- his back up - the military and a secret police. Using his new power he invaded Ethiopia in 1935 and 1937.

4. Totalitarianism in Germany (Fascism/Nazism under Hitler) A. Germany was especially devastated by the war and were willing to go to great lengths to fix their country. B. Young man, in the Nazi party: tried to overthrow the government (the Weimar Republic), he failed and was put in jail. C. When he was released from prison, Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor and formed a new government –which passed the Enabling Act. This gave Hitler the power to ignore the constitution. D. Enacted new policy’s to control the people : Rule by Terror Nazi Youth Censorship Anti-Semitism
7. Japan under Emperor Hirohito and Hideki Tojo Japan’s main income source was exports of luxury goods. The price for these goods dropped during the depressions, leaving Japan broke. The military leaders blamed the west (Europe and US) for their problems, and took control of the main operations of the government. The emperor was left as a figurehead and this totalitarian government began a campaign of expansionism throughout Asia. Hideki Tojo,”the Razor” was the military leader that ran the government alongside Hirohito. However, Hirohito was the Emperor in name only. Tojo was building up Japan’s military and was the mastermind behind the attack on Pearl Harbor.
