A Community Conversation #Highschool2022 January 17, 2017

Why are we here tonight? Introduce a framework for change: “The Profile of a Virginia Graduate” View Most Likely to Succeed, offering one school’s approach to contemporary high school for lifelong learning. It provokes a different kind of thinking about teaching and learning. Gain input from you about our graduate profile. Provide a venue for discussion and making connections. We hope you enjoy what should be an entertaining evening with fellow citizens: educatos, students, parents, and community members. Matt Take a moment to introduce School Board Members: _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Board of Supervisors Members: Doug Walker / Tom Foley / Pam Moran School Principals, Assistant Principals, and Teachers Members of the High School Council and Members of School Teams Ask Kate Acuff & Diantha McKeel to say a few words about the project

Workplace & Continuing Education Desired Skills / Requisites The BOE, in collaboration with stakeholders representing K-12 education, institutions of higher education, business and industry, policymakers and community leaders should develop a Profile of a Virginia Graduate. In the development of such a Profile, the BOE should consider the “5 Cs” – critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship – needed for success in the Virginia economy. From the SOL Innovation Committee, November 2015 Report Matt

Planning process overview Stage Visioning Facility Planning Study Decision/ Approval Timing August 2016 – February 2017 February 2017 – October 2017 November 2017 – April 2018 Purpose Using multiple sources of information, data, and feedback, the Board will identify a vision for high schools that prepare young people to graduate ready to enter adult life. Identify options to address capacity issues at Albemarle as well as the facility impact of the vision articulated in previous stage on current facilities. Take action on recommendations of previous two stages. Matt

Planning process overview How will we change our high school program to meet the profile of the graduate established by VADOE and ACPS? How will we ensure parity of programming so that all four of our high school programs are modernized and provide equitable access to community based learning experiences, like internships? How will we deal with high school capacity needs as well as a change to our model through program changes and / or facility additions and renovations? Matt

Timeline for Visioning Process Key Activities Sept. Oct. Nov. Dec. Jan. Feb. High School Council HS 2022 Community Advisory Board HS 2022 Website & Research Database Stakeholder Sharing Meetings School Board Work sessions Community Event Summary Report w/Deliverables Matt Mention school board member field trips.

# for today’s meet Guiding Questions What do you think is noteworthy based on viewing the film? Are we preparing our students more for the 20th or the 21st Century? What skills should our students be learning to be life-ready? What opportunities exist in our community for students to practice work skills through internships and mentorships? Matt to Introduce, and Pat to use for follow-up

High School Council Members Deliverables Administrator and teacher representatives from all high schools and CATEC Lead Instructional Coaches Middle School Principal Deliverables Draft High School Program Guide Sample Student Pathways Jay In addition to this work, a high school council has been created to begin the process of developing a vision for a new student experience in our schools. The committee consists of teacher and administrators from each high school, central administrative staff, lead instructional coaches and a middle school administrator. The goal of this group is to develop a draft program guide and sample student pathways that will be delivered to the board in February for your feedback.

What common experiences would help make our vision a reality? 9th 10th 11th 12th Thematic focus at each grade level Passion and Transition Community and Connections Jay The council is beginning to develop suggested way in which we could help our students meet the goals of the profile. A suggestion that has emerged from our work is to develop a thematic focus for each year of high school beginning with self-exploration and foundations in the ninth grade, collaboration and discovery in the 10th, community and connections in grade 11 and culminating with passion and transition in a students final year. We envision these themes being delivered through a dedicated advisory period and also interwoven into their coursework. Collaboration and Discovery Self-exploration & Foundations

Fostering passion Allow students to “pitch” credit ideas Eagle Scout, work-based learning, athletics, drama Create options for ¼ and ½ credit electives Create an equally distributed grading scale, allowing P/F options Consider changes to weighted grades Revise add/drop practices Partial lottery for any classes/programs requiring application Rethinking how we use time in the building Capstone project / Community based work for Juniors & Seniors Jay The council also began thinking about what changes we may need to make so that student choices are driven by personal passions and interests instead of by competition for college admission. Ideas that we may bring forward to the board include: Ideas from central staff that we will be bringing back to the council also include rethinking class size and rethinking how we use time within the building The HS2022 team has used our work to date to develop this Day in the Life video of how a student’s experience might look different in the coming years. We’ll debut that for you tonight.

Next steps Bringing ideas to site based teams for feedback Reading and discussing all the ideas from tonight! Bringing ideas to site based teams for feedback Developing the instructional program needed to accomplish our goals Developing pathways for students Creating “Tables of Specifications” Draft Program Guide and Pathways presented to the Board in February Jay With that information at hand, we will deliver a draft program guide and student pathways document to the board in February.
