Adventures in Flipping Vicki Todd Southwestern Community College Sylva, NC

Pre-Calc is a challenge Nation wide problems with this class. Experience with Flipping in liberal art math classes. Lecturing for 5 hours a week not working Where are individual students at. I was running out of words and energy. More time with students = better overall grades The right thing to do is not always the easiest

Project Access Inspiration happened in New Orleans… Project Acccess member presented reading guides. Students take notes Answer questions about the section using their notes Work on labs in class Assigned homework after Could I adapt this to a curriculum class….

The Three Step Approach Before class In class After class

Step 1: Before Class Students take notes on either assigned videos or the textbook before class. Notes are used to answer questions on the reading guide at the beginning of class. Students are taught note taking Treat this as though they were reading for English class. Focus on definitions and algorithmic steps.

Example Section 1.1/Day 2 2. a. What is the distance formula? c. What theorem was used to prove what the distance formula is? d. What is the midpoint formula? e. Find the midpoint between (9,-4) and (-6,9) 3. Using the midpoint formula, find the endpoint if given a midpoint of (4,3) and one point (11,7). 4. a. Define collinearity. b. What are the steps for determining the collinearity of three points? 5. a. How can you use the distance formula to determine if three points form a triangle? b. How can you determine if a triangle is a right triangle or not? c. Determine if the following points form a triangle: A(3,17), B(-16,5) and C(4,4) d. If it is a triangle, is it a right triangle, equilateral, isosceles, scalene or right isosceles or right scalene?

Step 2: In class Students answer questions using the notes they have taken. Previous example Not all questions are answered. Answers are BRIEF. Reading guide turns into study guide. All questions including problems are answered as a class. This is the only lecture part of the class. Students are placed into groups with labs.

Lab Example Find the coordinates of the midpoint of the segment joining the given points. 1. (0, 2) and (6, 4) 2. (-2, 2) and (6, 4) 3. (6,-7) and (-6, 3) 4. (-11, 3) and (8,-7) 5. (x, 2) and (x+4, -4) Find the distance between the two points. 6. (-4, 2) and (2,-1) 7. (-2, -3) and (-2, 4) 8. (3, 2) and (5, -2) 9. (5, -7) and (8,-2) For the given endpoints of a diameter, find a. the center of the circle b. the radius of the circle 10. (-8, 6) and (0, 0) 11. (4,-9) and (-2, -9) 12. (-5, 7) and (4, -2)

Step 3: After class Finish labs not completed in class. Sometimes work is taken up in groups and sometimes individually. Students are assigned homework using the online component. Students are given 5 exams including a final. Homework, Labs, Reading guides and the final counted for 15% of grade with each exam counting for 10% each.

Conclusion Number of students from Fall to Spring was different. Spring historically little different due to the rate of retakes. Huge amount of work to begin with. 172 Noticeable increase in test grades HUGE increase in student participation. Was the difference: a basic understanding of the material before hand? the ability to be able to work more with students?

After Spring…. Fall 2016 the adventure continues with flipping with ITV. Reading guide is now called Note Checker. Labs refined and less amount of problems assigned. There needs to be time spent teaching note taking skills at the beginning of the semester. There is no expectation of understanding only a base level of knowledge much like reading for English class. I am going to flip 172.
